Trying to update v 2.77 to v 2.78

I have updated all the updates up to 2.77. But using all the same procedures, connections, etc., I used for the previous ones, v 2.78 doesn't work. ???

Well I got it done. What had done was to keep clicking on the expanded files. What I forgot was to click on the icon that the files put on the desktop. Duh.

But isn't the 2.78 upgrade less sensative and loss of depth?

No. The depth is the same. The sensitivity is the same. The only difference is that deeper targets MAY give you a tone only, and no VDI number. I've yet to see that, and I have about 12 hours on 2.78, and about 35 hours on the machine overall.

2.78 fixed the pinpointing problem I was having with 2.77 and is also way less chattering and more stable. At least on my machine and the ground I hunt on.

Dirt_swinger,

I'm not arguing, just looking for clarification in considering going from 2.77 to 2.78. Is what you are describing (about possible tone only at greater depth) what you see in Park 1, Park 2, or both? I saw someone comparing 2.88 to basically the Park 2 setting of v2.77

I've not encountered what they're talking about AT ALL in 2.78, so I can't speak to which mode it happens in reliably.

I've seen noticeable improvements (for me) going to 2.78. It just feels more stable, less annoyingly chattery.

No loss of depth.

Pinpointer is working again.

Oddly enough, on the first 20 hours of the machine I noticed I was finding almost NO nickels. I just chocked that up to my lack of experience on this machine. After the 2.78 update they seemed like they started to float to the surface! I have no idea why that is, and could admittadly be me just getting more familiar with it.

Anyway, I guess my opinion is that 2.78 is nothing to be scared of. Also, can't wait to get my hands on those new coils!

I don't know the answer to this. Sorry, Andy.

I have a theory on the "jumpy ID's" versus "more stable ID's at depth" within the Simplex software updates.
Some users prefer no ID to a jumpy ID at depth, while others prefer having a numerical reading to go along with what they hear, even if it's jumpy.

My Nokta Impact has a hidden setting called "Target ID Depth".

From page 11 of their manual -

Target ID Depth
This setting is not present in the menu.
Adjusts the depth level that the device displays an ID for a detected target. It consists of 3
levels: Hi (High), In (Intermediate), Lo (Low). Factory default is set to ''In''.
The lower the ID depth level is, the higher the ID accuracy and vice versa. At the high level,
the IDs may become jumpy.
To change the ID depth level, pull the trigger and press the up button simultaneously. Each
time you press the up button, the ID depth level will change.

I believe they put this tech in the Simplex. Different software revisions have different target ID depth settings, but they are unchangeable on the Simplex.

Very interesting! What do you mean by "Pull the trigger"?

The Nokta Impact uses a trigger for pin pointing rather than a thumb button.

Stupid me didn't even catch the fact that you were talking about the Impact. Apologies. My old White's had a trigger pinpointer and I loved it. Much easier to use than the one on my Simplex.

I agree that this option on the Impact is really interesting. You wonder if there isn't a similar feature on the Simplex somewhere buried in the software. I hunt mainly schools and parks, and although I would say my first criteria for an interesting signal is that it is repeatable, I really use the numbers. I really want to know if it's worth my time to dig for change or jewelry. Beep and dig isn't attractive to me. I want the machine to ID it as best as possible.

Good discussion

If a Simplex is making a sound ...its lying. and i'm drinking beer and eating peanut butter cookies.

It means that the Simplex is like a fishing lure that is designed to catch fisherman not fish... I have found a few coins on edge ,I will give it that.. however it is not a machine I would take to a new permission. no way ever, Good Luck

That's a hot take, especially on the Simplex section of this forum. I would love to know why you feel that way, and what machine you'd recommend. I mean this from a genuine place of curiosity. I have A Simplex, but have had other machines. Would honestly like to hear your thoughts.

Do you really like the Simplex? really? I don't .. wonky hi -low sounds , Id not stable, The coil is way to big... no separation , the shaft wobbles like Gumby , but I bought one and now I can call it what it is. However I am willing to try one of the smaller coils just to see if all of the bad traits are because of the 11" coil, right now from using both, my Quest x-10 is a better machine... depth and stability, neither machine come anywhere near the performance of any of my Golden Mask machines. 4wd ,1+dual tone, One 15 khz .If the Simplex was my first machine I would most likely be knitting as a hobby. Thought I would throw this in also, every Tesoro "U-MAX" ever made is a better machine than a Simplex (Finding coins relics),unless u dunk one in water.. lol.. Good Luck

Hey thanks for taking the time to reply.

I actually really do like it so far. I'm a novice user maybe bordering on kind of intermediate? I obviously don't have you depth of knowledge or expertise. My 2 other detectors were a Bounty Hunter and a Whites. But I haven't detected in about 13 years. I'm enjoying the Simplex, knowing that at around $300 it's not going to do or be everything. It's got me excited about detecting again though, so that's fun. The shaft does drive me nuts with its wobbles, that much we can agree on! Awesome Pic, by the way.
