last few hunts including a 1st year Shield Nickel

It's not in the greatest shape, but I can wipe the 1866 Shield Nickel off my bucket list. Slow recovery speed and ultra-slow scanning in heavy iron WILL find the goods. Don't believe the hype of extreme fast recovery speeds and fast coil sweeps. I guarantee anyone that was running those type of settings would of left all these nice items in the ground. Over the two Roosevelt dimes (before I knew what they were) I fooled around with recovery speed and programs.

Park2....useless....I would of never of dug them
Field1 targets sounded very weak and tones "bled out" - I would of walked right over the targets.
Field2 targets sounded much better and held together better. Definitely would of dug.
Park1 b*tch slapped the targets and gave the best tone and TID.

Recovery of 5, the tones started breaking up and were inconsistent. Recovery of 6 or higher couldn't even "see" either one of these dimes. The depth were 5-6" range. Not real deep but lots of iron in the ground.

Detector: Equinox 800
Noise Cancel
GB - 0
50 tones (and yes, I CAN hear a difference over silver)
F2 - 0
Recovery 4
Ultra slow scanning

Now that's some great hunting and some excellent advise! The spot I just got kicked out of by the old lady had very heavy iron so when I get to talk to her and get back in there I'll follow your tips! I almost exclusively hunt field 2 and use higher recovery speed and seem to have decent success but I'll definitely implement your hunting tips and see how it pans out.

What a group of amazing finds!

sweet finds! my first shield nickel ever was worse than that one. yes the slow sweep speed in iron, of course the E-trac is a bit different... but I find the recovery fast on helps me in locking on to a tone. I have tried off and the tone seems to blend in with the null or iron tone.
way to pick out what anyone else would have swept right over!

Very good results Jim!!!
Those settings you mention have helped me find a few silver coins too!!!🤭
Now I just need to find a new site to hunt, so I can catch up with you....

I think you already know where I am going to recommend you hunt 🤣🤣🤣

Thank you. Yep give it a shot with slower recovery and an ultra-slow (FBS / BBS) scan.
Then when I get over a suspect target, I perform quicker short baby sweeps right over the target. If the machine starts extracting a tone that waivers but doesn’t bleed out, start digging. Good luck and would love to hear your thoughts and review after sometime implementing this change.

I'm definitely going to! Ty for the tips I'm always willing to try what works for others to see if it sniffs out some goodies I've skipped over! What I should have been doing is switching to different modes over targets to see how each one sounded. None of the targets are deeper than 4 or 5 inches. At this site I had a large cent ring as low as 16 (iron with it) and had another ringing from 24-39. I have been using the Nox 800 there and hopefully the lady lets me back in so I can bring the CTX and see how it does after I hit it a few more times with the Nox.

I'm actually thinking of going to a spot I just found the other day and try it out right now. I've found a handful of goodies but it seems to have a lot of iron for such a small area.

You using the 6 inch or 11 inch coil?

I only use the stock 11” coil
Investigate the signals and dig. Yes, you will dig some iron but make sure you recheck your holes as over time you will discover your hunch was right and it’s not just iron in the hole.
Good luck 🍀👍 and keep me posted - Jim

It would be interesting if you were closer to turn you loose in the Old Arboretum. Lots of iron grunts and caps and tabs. Even with the F75 if I slow down it will lock onto a target and down I go. I probably do miss some stuff just due to the fact if I get a good signal one way I will shift 90 degrees and if no repeat I move on. Jkine runs the CTX3030 and the eTrac and usually gets more clad or coins but is that machine/operator or just right time/place..... either way good hunt and finds for you!

I wish I was closer 😁
I’d love to take you up on your offer!
Then after digging our brains out we can go for pizza 🍕. My treat!
Mr. Ron don’t leave those one-way signals....Those two roseys I found did just that. It was a small window of a high tone.
Many of my targets are only one- way signals and some have been the nicest coins I have found to date.
Note: all these one-way targets are not always good targets. Overtime in learning the detector I have come to understand more when it’s iron or non-ferrous. And no, I’m not perfect at this. However I keep learning more and more on these suspicious targets.

Nice hunting Earthly, don't forget about that little tip of going in circles to get some different angles. You may get a MDWI ( Metal detecting while intoxicated ) ticket but just it to me and I'll pay the bill.
yes, thank you for the reminder!

Nice finds Jim still looking for a shield I’m always changing up my settings especially over questionable targets good advice....

I should have made myself a bit clearer..... if higher tones one way then if I shift 90 degrees and get low iron grunts or all over the place numbers I move on........every 99 number I get is a no brainer, iron
