Found this today near where my buddy found two mercs. I think its older cause its stamped STERLING, not .925 and its a bit bigger than a quarter. Not sure if its military or police. thanks for looking

In the photo it seems to be goldish? It would be Captain insignia anyway you look at it but if it is goldish then I would lean towards police or fire as the wearer, just my opinion. Neat find for sure!!!!
 
Yep, Captain. If it's sterling, it's very likely to be US Military. Most police and civilian ones are plated. The fact it's not "pin-backed" and has a pin/clasp suggests it has some age.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I'm going to enter it under the military category at our next MD club meeting.
 
Could be an Army/USAF/USMC Captain or US Navy Lieutenant.
 
I think Yeasty hit it but could be old. The ones I'm familiar with had a push type keeper on each bar. I still have mine from the Navy. About 60 years old. The bars, not me.
