Help hunting in iron

Recently bough an Etrac after a 6 year hiatus detecting and former EXP11 user so have some familiarity with Minelabs.
I will be hunting a lodge in the Upper Peninsula, Mi built in to 20's for 4 million at that time and connected to a ghost town that was from late 1800's until earl 30's.

I've used the eTrac once since buying it and my challenge is there are nails and shell casings everywhere. Last time out I was using TTF and slow swing speed and digging high Co's that were bent nails.

Anyone with suggestions on what disc patterns to try or if there is a TTF pattern to use with disc to pull out some keepers?

Thanks!
Todd

I have no problem digging casing, if there was a spot to find a gold coin for me, it would be here.
I have an 8x6 and 10x12 coil and am guessing its either TTF with 10 beeps per sweep or disc the iron out and hope one squeaks through.

It seems like the Etrac users have mostly moved on from the forums or swinging new tech. and I've spent hours on tube looking for videos and can't find anything there.

You didn't r really say what you are hunting so I will just assume it is coins.
Now for the shell casings as said above they are brass and will come in close to your coins. I would suggest digging a few and with a open pattern see where they really come in at and just watch for those numbers. Also if you get a FE-CO that is something near your coins you can open up a few squares for the ID of the casings that will keep them from bleeding into your coin pattern.

Now for the rusty nails, again I don't know what kind of pattern you are running so I assume again you are trying to disc out the nails. If so the nails will bleed into open coin pattern area and give you that high tone.
So I would suggest to get those nails a little more under control, open up Ferrous lines 28 through 35 and Co 40 through 49. That would be the lower right corner of your pattern.
Then I would suggest running either 4TF or multi TF. Now your will be able to hear that low iron tone be cause you have stopped the bleed.
You can also just open up that whole right side top too bottom CO 40 through 49.

Hope this helps,
Ron in WV

Everybody approaches everything differently. I'd probably sport my 6" Sef, and start with a very tight discrimination pattern-- like Elmy's 1-10. Then approach it like an archeologist would-- some time here, some time there, then see if you can find any goodies.

Also, I would read every single post of Elmy's.

The Etrac is a fantastic machine-- I bought newer tech and have some buyer's remorse.

One thing you hopefully won't run into is countless Aluminum pulltabs. I prefer TTC to TTF. I can usually tell a nail since the ferrous number will be unstable if I check it at 90 degrees. Also, I suggest you set "Trash Density" to HIGH in the Expert menu. With it set to HIGH, the E-TRAC will show a good target on the screen when the good target is next to a high ferrous target like a nail.

Also, the deeper a coin is, the higher the FE number will be. I dug an 1857 quarter down 10" that displayed as "20-46" and there was a nail next to it. Don't just dig those "12-46" signals. The deeper a coin is will cause the FE# to increase since there's mineral content between the coin and the surface. I also like to use a 6 x 8 coil and go slow. Good luck and let us know how you do.

all covered and eliminated in the 110 pattern.

I'll second Elmy. I always assumed a more open pattern was da tits-- conventional wisdom is that a pattern that is too tight will null good targets. I've done alot of experimenting-- Elmy is right on this. From now on, inland coin hunting, I'm going to use a very tight pattern: saves time, digging, trash collecting, etc.

Of course I'll use a more open pattern if gold is on the menu...
