For the folks that go by the numbers...

A good example, Ted, of what you are saying about numbers just happened to me yesterday morning. Moving across an area not to far from the car that has been hunted pretty hard by three of us of late, I got a nice mixed tone and lock on 20/21 tid on my Nox 600. Having dug numerous old wheats with those numbers and a couple of I H's and some wheats at 18 and 19, I dug it. As it turned out it wasn't either a wheat or I H. It was a well worn 1790 half reale. Un-fortunately, I've dug many other targets that are of the same numbers that are trash, but that reale had a nice soft tone and small feel like a coin to it. For me, the tones are pretty telling on the Nox and I have 81 years old hearing. HH jim tn

TID is one thing…but those smooth, soft tones is what tells me to dig. Congrats Jimmy on the 1790 half Reale!

Here our Canadian copper pennies can give me readings anywhere from 18 to an occasional 28 ! That's a huge range but depending on condition and ground they will read in the lower or higher range. I use tones mainly on this machine and look at the numbers only as an aid to identification.
 
Have 2 Nox 800s and have used extensively last 3 yrs including drowning first one twice. The Nox hits gold rings very hard and stable. I know if the VID jumps around and it is a strong signal 14 - 17 (but could jump 3-5 numbers w single swing) most likely a pull tab. Also, pull tab # will change if you raise the coil. Push tabs are more stable around 17. As long as gold isn't too deep (and produce weak signal), gold signal is strong it is very stable. Once you get the feel of a gold ring w the Nox I have high confidence it is a ring before recovering it. Fishing weights often fool me because they're very hard and stable as well and VID is a wide range, like gold, because of varying weight/size.
 
I hunt with three tones. 4 tones if you count the threshold, which you should. I suppose that somewhere out there there's a reason to cherry pick and dig by the numbers but not in my world of old sites. Threshold, Grunt, mid tone and high tone are all I've got. I dig all positive targets and my only basis for passing a target really is the size of the target. I dug a KGII last weekend at a conservative estimate of 11" It didn't sound like a coin or throw up consistent numbers. You dig it because of where you are and the size. There's not much else to say. If you don't want to dig because of fatigue or attention that day then go home. Come back when you have it together. The reason there's deep stuff still everywhere is most won't dig or can't deal with a bent square nail at the bottom of the hole three times straight.
It's just part of the deal. Get out there
