Deciding on and comparing new machines. Can get a little comic.

Some things to watch for. Whenever a Hot number comes out, out comes all the nail board tests (Comparison's). Yep, pretty near any detector ever build has gone through one of these tests. Detectors costing from $250 and upwards to the thousands, never seen a video where one failed. How's that? Unless your there it's like the old shell game (finding the pea). So there are machines that are too heavy, too frail, good for fresh water only, runs great on hot soil, black sand and under power wires. Ever notice a machine comes out, no body likes the stock coil. Too large, too small, Double D or some other magic concoction. How about saying the coil is waterproof. But you got to wrap the brains in shrink wrap, and then rig a antenna from the coil to somewhere around your head. Computer updates, better have your smart phone with you unless a update comes in. How about this? Dozens of formulas combating trash, than go hunt in All Metal. Yep there's a lot to compare to when you go shopping. And yes I'm guilty of falling for some of this stuff too.

I most certainly got caught up in the hype.
Went through to many machines hoping for the end gamer do all machine.
And here I am back to the beep and digs.
And loving it.
Until somebody comes out with a cheap GPR imaging , positively metal identifying less than 4 lbs detector.
I'm done buying all the Hyped BS.

Personally I’m waiting for Weatherby to come out with a 460 Magnum that weighs under 4lbs……. Still wont buy that either!

Man, I want to be PART of the process!
I'm with Del. Being part of the process is what the hobby is all about. Handling emi and bad ground, picking through trash and learning to squeeze out another half inch of depth, are some of the things that make this hobby interesting. It would be far less fun if I knew every time I dug a target what it was before hand. I like those half resales and half dime surprises. HH jim tn

No, but I know a guy with a Leatherman…..😂

Would pay admission to watch someone else shoot it!
Back in the mid-late 70's, my neighbor bought the first 44 mag barrel made, for his TCC...
It was super lightweight, and he was really looking forward to using it.

The very first shot broke the wooden grip, the forend piece blew off, and he had a bruise on his hand that lasted two weeks.
After sending the Contender and barrel back in, TC admitted they'd made the first barrels way too light / short, and gave him a new bull barrel....along with a repaired forend and wooden grip.

It WAS fun to watch,
;)

I can't understand why people actually use nailboard tests and put up tests on you tube showing how great a detector is on targets lying on the ground.Even more strange is the fact that some will go and buy a detector on the strength of these tests......unbelievable.
Nalboard tests showing recovery speeds, unmasking capabilities and tests showing discrim capabilities on targets lying on the ground have no bearing whatsoever on targets that are buried,if anybody believes they do,make a proper test garden and do the tests yourself.I have argued this point for a long while due to a lot of experience that i have obtained doing many tests on targets above and below the ground...........nailboard tests are totally innacurate.I have even experienced detectors that do badly in nailboard tests doing better on buried targets than detectors that have done the best in nailboard tests, there are just so many variables.

I always thought anything with a vid was too complicating and changes the basic principles of metal detecting.
People start to get wrapped ip in numbers and get too distracted.
If it beeps dig it and you will find more stuff
Vid from 0-99 will show small gold anywhere from 0-99
If your not digging everything your missing stuff. This is a hobby of consistency and patience
The only numbers you should be concerned with is the amount of holes you dig

The location is what determines which signals to dig.
So if you are finding gold jewelry at say 7-10 in a park you would ignore that at the beach and only dig say 30-40?
I mean im not sure im just asking.
You wouldn’t second guess those same numbers at a different location and rely on the detector to be for certain?

Im no expert just my experience and videos I’ve seen jewelry even coins come in at all different places across the spectrum.
I guess you have more confidence than i do in the numbers i would be second guessing everything thinking what if that was a piece of gold at $1800 an ounce sure would beat a penny or nickel

I detect for fun not $. If I'm in an extremely trashy park for example I'm not going to dig eleventy thousand holes in hopes of finding a ring. That would make it work not fun. If I want $ I can make it a lot easier than digging pull tabs and foil all day. Now on a ball field I'll dig everything above iron.
