Things i have learn running the 13 x 17 coil

I mosty hunt dense thrash but every now and then i strap on the monster and take it for a spin . One thing you can cover ground (BUT) i know when not to use it when the iron becomes to dense the machine gives no tone and no ID just a spray of dots on the screen .
What happens is your always on a target all the iron in the ground becomes one target there fore the machine never comes off the iron to give ID or tone you don't get ID or tone unless you clear the target which you can't do if there's iron always under the coil.
In this situation when you hit a coin above the iron say 2 to 6 inches and deeper the cursor well be a block of say 12.40 to 12.45 and also include 13.40 to 13.45 you think it's a big target but it's not you do a lift and you can get the coil 2 feet off the ground and it's still there .
Wiggling off the target you get iron both ways so you think iron or can but this is the same thing as a nail masking a coin the coin is masking the iron because the return of the coin is greater than the iron this signal is a boomer i don't know if the iron makes it sound louder or what but she's a boomer so lift test won't work here detune and locate coin .sube

I run the 17" in iron all the time with sensitivity at 10.

That's one way but let me explain what i am dealing with . The soil is 8 to 10 inches deep then there's a clay layer everything stops here all the nails and iron are at this level and older coins newer coins from the 30s would be a bit shallower say 6 to 9 inches .
Changing to the stock coil 11 inch i would get a constant 12.36 to 12.37 no noise just a cursor hovering between these #s and never lock on but a coin would if it was within 8 inches .
Changing out to the 6 inch coil it would work as expected but then depth became a issue so your hunting with everything on the same plane basically except for pull-tabs foil and the coins that did not get to the iron and coin layer. So 6 well not hit the deeper stuff the 11 would sometimes but with the constant 36 to 37 showing on the screen but no tone just ID kind of like a ghost ID .lol
Did not hit anything at the clay layer head scratcher lol .sube

In my soil, i can hit an 8" coin pretty good with the 6" coil.

I can hit a 9" merc in my test garden with the 6" coil. I just have to work it a little.

My soil is sand based and targets just keep sinking.

All a mater of testing in the wild and see what works the best.

I would agree on the 8 inches in my soil with a once in a while 9 inch coin ,but with this iron layer it does effect depth on the 6 just not as deep as normal soil that has no clay .Soils without the clay layer have iron at varied depths deeper and shallow but that clay layer is the stop point for everything . So the detector is seeing this clay layer with all the targets on the same plane reducing depth.sube

I think the deepest coin depth with the 17" coil with sensitivity at 10 I've seen was 7".

I have a very iron infested place I was going to spend some time at this year. Its one of the oldest parts of town and has been a park the whole time. Only issue is they used it as a demolition derby site also. Lots of different forms of junk. The whole site is a sheet of iron.

Its defiantly something I would never recommend a new person to the ctx to try. Learn the machine first before trying the 17 in a trashy/iron infested place.

Good info Sube, I'll try in in the next couple weeks.

I need to figure out what works at this site.

Also get the local retired guys wound up. They don't like it when the ctx shows up. Its actually pretty funny watching them whisper to each other. I let one use it last year and he actually liked it.

Do you get extra depth with the 17" coil? I've had people say yes, some say no. Andy in his book says with the new type of coils, you don't get any extra depth with a larger coil.

It indeed is deeper than the stock coil how ever if your dirt has a lot of mineralized soil it is a wash for depth .
But in milder dirt expect 1 to 2 inches on a dime size target and 2 plus on larger coins.
If you use manual say set for 26 with the stock coil you can run the 13 x17 at 21 auto plus 3 which well run much smoother than the stock at 26 manual as you know manual hits on everything but auto gets rid of most all of the ground noise from mineral.
I did buy Andys book but it was not out when i bought my ctx i didn't get much out of the book but how to stop the noise cancel when i hit it by accident :)
But his coin patterns fe set at 28 is not what i have found to be very helpfull when deep coin hunting .
The way to learn this machine is to run the fe line as high as can be 35 and no disc out targets take your lumps as a newbie and dig it all till you know what it's telling you.
If you run with disc and a lower fe line you well miss many older and deeper coins mixed with iron testing confirms this just remember if you don't except the nail with the dime it well go low where as excepting the nail the dime well go high.
If you run Andys pattern you well find lot's of coins which most people do but the deeper and harder to find coins mixed with iron well be missed i have used the ctx for 10 years now and still learn things hunting but to make finds in beat up parks you have to be different .Everybody has read his book so what patterns well they be running?.sube

I called a place to order a 17" coil today, they said the CoilTek 14" gave better results/depth than the Minelabs 17"

Think they were just trying to sell what they had in inventory?
