New Legend

Bought a Legend last week upgraded it to V1.09 and looked for a silver dime I burried 10 years ago. I could not find it with any other detector from A Whites DFX, Fisher F75 all upgrades, friends with Garrett. However I found it with the Legend. It was only 6" deep but after I dug it I found that there was a peice of iron next to it, thats why nobody could find it. I live on the bluff of a mountian range and the ground is terrable, goes from red clay to soft loom, but 6" on a dime is about max. All my others detectors would read the ground but the Legend was very stedy.

Wait til you try 4khz, a whole new world…..

welcome to the legend nation LOL I have two of the Legends one for me and one I picked up to try and teach my wife how to detect, which is kind of futile with my wife's medical issues, I love the legend the ground I detect is tough also.

Not sure what you detect for I detect for gold nugget's, on ground like you are describing try the gold mode also in one of the multi frequencies or go to single frequency 20 or 40 KHz if you are searching for gold nugget's

How has the legend been for gold prospecting? Has it been as good as other detectors made more specifically for gold prospecting and what settings do you use?

As Ronstar said…..put it in 4khz and smile

put a quarter on the ground and sweep over it in park mode M1….The quarter should read 50/51…..now take small pieces of foil and surround the quarter keeping them close to the quarter…..sweep again and see if you can hit that quarter….You will see that you can’t….Now put your Legend in 4khz….Sweep over the quarter now …..Walla ! …..You can hit the quarter !….You will miss really small gold in 4 khz, but you will hit deep coins/silver….The adjustability of the Legend is the best feature(s) of the machine ..

DigDog what you do not seem to understand the ground I detect in is some of the hardest ground anyone could ever detect in, the ground minerals are such that no VLF can see much deeper than 5 inches, so no the legend has been no better than the gold detector VLF's i have, the one detector I had that would see deeper on the ground I am on it was a TDI, I have since sold in preparation to purchase the new Axiom, which is a
PI (Pulse Induction) detector, I have also just recently purchased the Garret 24K which I have yet too try out other then in my front yard, It also seems to see through the minerals a little better then my other VLF's, the 24K is also a VLF but geared more for gold detection it is a single frequency 48 KHz gold detector, I will say the Legend does run better in the gold mode multi mode or single frequency 20 or 40 KHz, the one detector that has actually surprised me on the ground I detect in is the Xterra 705 which is a multi frequency detector of sorts but it will only run one frequency at a time by changing the coils the 705 runs 3 KHz, 7.5 KHz, and 18.75 KHz you change frequency by changing the coil on the 705 I run the 705 with the 6x10 inch 18.75 KHz that detector actually runs quite well on the ground I detect the 705 is actually my favorite detector of all the detectors I have used and one of the most under rated detector ever produced

Some who nugget hunt on mineralized ground report the Legend & Equinox 800 are very, very close in performance & that it is quite good even on very small bits.

I'm anxious to hear how you like the 24k.
Especially in your tough ground

from what I have seen when detecting with my buddies, we will compare targets the Legend and the Nox 800 are vary vary close in capabilities, depth, and separation and other things are pretty even target ID are world's apart though the one thing we do notice though is the EMI does not affect the Legend as much

again no detector I have used or seen in use here where I detect will see much deeper than 5 inches and that is a struggle for the detectors I use and have seen, that is why most of us that detect here also use a pulse detector and they also struggle in depth, this is all due to the fact there is a layer of magnetite that is down anywhere from 1-5 or6 inches that is like detecting over a iron plate

to put this in perspective walk up to your car door and swing your detector over that car door, that will give you a picture in your mind as to what I am dealing with almost every time I go out and detect LOL

so far I am liking the 24K, but I have not been out to the areas I detect for gold yet in my front yard which is also tough to detect in, just not as tough as where I detect for nuggets but it is still tough I am seeing really good depth out of the 24K it does a great job of eliminating the magnetite to a extent which is surprising considering it is a high frequency gold detector running 48 KHz it has some really nice features compared to the GM1000 which the GM1000 is a turn on and detect detector pretty much the 24K is not, the 24 k has a lot of adjust ability to it that allows you to tune out hot rocks and other things that drive most VLFs crazy

i will tell you that in an air test I did with the 24K it hit my 10k wedding band at 12-13 inches my GM1000 I just sold would not hit that same band much over 6-8 inches so yes I am liking what I am seeing in the 24K but what it does out in the areas I detect for nuggets remains to be seen tat is where the real testing will begin as I told DigDog the one detector that has really surprised me is my Xterra 705 running the 18.75 KHz 6x10 inch coil

the more I play with the 24K in my front yard which is approximately 1.6 acres of harsh ground the more I am liking it it finds coins also hit a penny and nickel down about 7 inches and both were screaming vary loud and clear with a high TID the penny was in the low 90s and the nickel was in the 80s so I am going to have to do a TID test just to see what TIDs come up on clad coins the gold meter was showing both on the non ferrous side, it is way different from the GM1000 which had no target IDs at all, just another learning experience its all good

I will say this 24K is running smooth as silk on the ground I am detecting, and there is no missing a good target when you get over a good target because it definitively has a different sound when you get over a good target , the other feature I like on the 24K is you can change the tone from a zip zip to a regular target tone so far I am happy with the 24 K I was never really happy with the GM1000, and do not take me wrong I am not saying the GM1000 is a bad gold detector because it is not and was not for me there were just things I did not care for on the GM1000

Did the gm 1000 do good on your ground ?
As well as the 24k ?

The GM1000 did not run to bad on the ground I detect on the problem with the GM 1000 was the issues I mentioned like having to re ground balance constantly, whne you layed it down to retrivev a target that was located you had to re ground balance if you raised the coil a little to high while detecting you had to re ground balance, it just got real frustrating the worst thing for me was when you would start retrieving a target when you set the GM 1000 down it was a fight with it to keep it upright with the coil setting flat on the ground it would constantly fall over so every time you would have to set it back up just to run your plastic scoop or hand across the coil with your target in either your hand or plastic scoop, dont take me wrong it was a good gold detector that had frustrating things about it LOL, I located some great targets with the GM1000, the main reason I decided to sell the GM1000 and get the 24K the adjust ability of the 24K

to answer your question the 24 K runs smoother on the ground I detect

Does the 1000 have tracking and locked GB ?
Even my old MXT had that.
Except for the frequency it does quite well in a few spots around Alaska my little brother tells me.

the GM 1000 runs in tracking all the time there is no way to lock the ground balance it does not even give you any GB values at all so you are kind of detecting blind with the GM1000

the GM1000 is a turn on let it go through its frequency shift and start detecting once you perform the ground balance it runs silent until you get over a target or it becomes un stable you then stop an d re ground balance to quite it down then detect again
