Unsure if this is correct forum for this question but why do some brands of DD coils overlap in the middle and some don't? Just curious.

Name one that doesn't.

The term 'Double-D' came about with the first hobby-based detectors that used that design, Compass Electronics, to describe the 'Wide-Scan' or 'Double-D' Transmit and Receive winding layout because it looks like a 'D' shape with a reversed 'D' shape for the other winding. The two windings can be in a round-shaped coil or an elliptical or oblong-shaped housing, but a DD is just that. Two 'D' shaped windings with one reversed and overlapping.
