absolutely, same for aluminum.....lots of gold rings in the slaw and tab range.... so I still say aluminum is the most problematic over iron.

Ok, mildly different outlook here. I agree about pulltabs, beavertails, caps, and canslaw. But, if we just scrape the dirt off and put it in a box then you could still turn it in for recycle and add to your total payout. Yeah, I know its a PITA but if I can add a penny for each piece its better than throwing it in the garbage. Hell, its dug so capitalize.
Now old square nails are like digging quarters and halves. How? Im attaching a picture of a clock a local artist creates and she pays for those old square nails! Im not leaving that type of cash in the ground and its not like I’m intentionally digging for them so again, why not capitalize!!!

Wish I could collect all the BB's that are in the ground where I detect and sell them LOL, The BB's to pull tab ratio is probably 10000 to 1 and the brass casing's I dig the ratio is probably higher in some of the areas I detect, they look like war zones there are days detecting for gold nuggets that I will dig 500 holes and come back with one small gold bit but will have over 100 spent brass casings, and as many small bird shot pellets, you cannot pass up digging those because they sound just like a small gold nugget it is just the name of the game you either dig or you are possibly passing up a small gold bit

I save copper, brass and lead for a scrapper. Here in the city - the town gets the aluminum scrap dealer will Not take it.

Shell casings. It used to be recyclers would not take casings with primers still in place. Within the past couple years some techniques for separating spent primers from casings now allows them to pay full for yellow brass prices. I save them up and take in once a year along with the copper wire, junk brass, and other non magnetic metals. That along with magnetic metals gets me another $15-20 a year. It gets junk out of the ground and I make enough to take mama out for a surprise coffee…..
I've never felt like my hobby was a waste of time and neither is digging for rubbish as it's part of the hobby. With most detectors, it's easy to distinguish between ferrous and nonferrous objects, so ferrous has never been an issue for me, even with Fisher's CZ. Depending on the environment I decide whether or not I want to dig the pull tab area, so digging on the sandy beach is easy and I go for all targets except iron. Farmland can also hide some good finds in this PT range, as can the aluminum bottle caps range. I think experience will teach you where to dig to find the keeper. Because the detectorist decides what a keeper is, and to some it is iron.

On the farm here where I live it's mostly iron. Lots of old houses that are now gone. but lots of nails. I enjoy finding old tools from the 1800's but I'm not intentionally looking for them. Just an occasional side benefit. In the fields I use little to no disc.
