I just got a new to me Xterra 705 and took it out on its maiden voyage. I was using the 6" digger 3 khz coil. I ran it in all metal for a while and it was too noisy for me it started to give me a headache. So I switched to disc pattern #2 which quieted it down quite a bit. During my hunt I'd get a good sounding dime signal and would dig down only to find a thin piece of aluminum foil like from a candy wrapper. Is that normal? Or do I need to adjust my settings? I had sensitivity at 23 and threshold barely audible through my headphones. I also noise cancelled and ran in manual ground balance and also tried the tracking ground balance and still got signals that id'd high only to turn out to be a thin piece of aluminum foil. I have the 10.5 7.5khz coil along with the 5x10 18.5 khz coil and the 7.5 WOT coil for it. I'm a coin and jewelry hunter primarily and occasionally relic hunt. If you guys can help me out I'd appreciate it! Thanks Morgan

Try the factory reset 1st, it should run fairly quiet at 28 with any coil on it. If you have not got Diggers X-Terra book, you can download it in PDF.

Congratulations on picking up one of the best kept secrets in detecting (the 705).
The place to start with it is Digger's book, "Understanding Your X-Terra", available on Minelab's site for FREE.
Read it twice to start (easy read), then refer back to it between hunts.

The biggest trick to the 705 in All Metal is learning proper sweep speed. If it sounds like a kaliope on crack, you're going too fast. I actually like hunting in AM with 99 Tones because it teaches you proper sweep speed. Slow down to where each signal is defined. Good signals are clear, clean, and repeatable. Scratchy or irregular signals are most often trash.

ID accuracy shifts a bit depending on the frequency selected, which is illustrated in Randy's book toward the back in the section where he does a Q&A with Dr. Lawrence. Target bin widths are wider at the top of the scale with low frequency coils, and wider at the bottom with high frequency selections. The 7.5kHz coils have the most uniform bin widths, so are generally considered the most "honest".

I learned with the xterra that if you think you are going to slow, slow down more. I had a digger coil. But my favorite small coil was the 18.75khz. It seemed to IF the best for me. But I am a n Kentucky and my ground is good. Be sure to noise cancel. That helped me on several occasions.

Aluminum foil, canslaw, bent nails, and balled up wire will give you fits. I bought the Minelab 6" 18.75 khz coil a long time ago and it's been on ever since. As others have said, all metal and 99 (really 28 tones) tones is the way to go.

The 99 tones on the 705 always reminded me of a symphony going off in my ears LOL just to much information overload for me

A lot of that depends on the trash density or the areas you hunt. I tend to prefer farm fields where there used to be homes but hasn't had the foot traffic for 100 years, so there isn't a lot of trash to sift through.

I done a factory reset on the 705 and switched to the 5x10 hf coil and man it was like a whole new world. I was digging nickel after nickel and quite a few dimes and quarters and the 705 was locking on target ID's I think I have found my favorite new detector.
