This is a very good question. It was hoped during the war that Maryland would pull from the Union and join the Confederacy. Although Maryland remained loyal to the Union, she supplied the Confederate Army with many troops. Myself, personally, I would consider this a Confetrit button, in that many Southern troops wore their State Seal buttons and many times belt plates. Most Union troops tended to wear the U.S. Eagle buttons whether it was a general service button, or an Eagle shield, I, A, or C button which identified which branch of the army they served in. You have a really Nice, and somewhat Rare button. It will look great displayed, and has a story to tell all on its own. Congrat's.Now… is it Confederate or Yankee?

That is a shame, but you are finding alot of fine bullets.
Finding a corroded button from the CW is better than no button atall. I haven't found a button in quite some time.
That sux buddy. The one button I found that didn't fall apart on me I hit when I dug it.
