The art of plug cutting a thing of the past??

Ive been binging on youtube park metal detecting vids and it seems that nearly everyone digs enormous removable plugs. Its like someone dragging the needle across the record.
"If you see something say something"
I see it with all the big guys on YouTube you name it I’ve commented you should leave a hinge they dig a complete circle. Unbelievable.

What I do not understand is why instead of just digging rite off the get go why do they not run their pin pointer across the area where the target is to see if the target is close to the surface instead of digging these humongous holes and then realize their target is rite at the top of the plug where most good pin pointers would have found or seen the target they were retrieving but no everyone of them dig these massive holes

I totally agree with this.

The fact is a lot of these tubers are crap detectorists. They are also the first to wonder why they are banning detecting from sites, after all it isn't their fault LOL Just hit the (n) and unsubscribe after you leave your thoughts, unless they turned off the comments which is self explanatory.

Right now I use the Phoenix shovel and cut plugs. The plugs are mostly 4~5" in diameter and once replaced one can hardly see where the plug was dug. Question is; does the plug kill the grass; my personal observation is that it's less of a grass killer than those dug with a hand trowel/shovel.

If any youtubers are reading, do a vid. 3 sided plug leave turf attached, Minimal browning, quicker turf recovery. Full plug, goes full brown, lawnmower may suck it up. May get a million likes and stuffs, but may do a good service to the hobby

Depends what you use and the soil your digging. The lesche hand trowel/shovel is actually better than most metal detecting shovels. Most grass roots are only as long as the blade of grass.
If you are detecting in grass that is 6” high or more you might want to use a shovel, might also come in handy for the snakes.
But most park grass is only 1-2” inches and how you use the hand shovel makes all the difference

I cut NOT perfectly sided squares and lift out carefully. By having an odd side it is like a puzzle piece, it can only go back in one way.
The only time I’ve had plugs die is when the ground is really dry. Any moisture in the soil, and not stamping it down to death it will recover just fine. In fact if left a tiny bit above ground level it will settle naturally.
Only plug I ever saw get sucked up was from an industrial grade rider that the university uses, it got one of my plugs about 30 minutes after I cut it. I was able to retrieve the plug from the adjoining state and replace it mostly intact.
Yes, I use three sided mostly in very well kept and manicured lawns. I use a garden trowel for shallow finds of 4” or less as it has a smaller diameter plug.

The lesche tool with its very sharp serrated edge cuts through grass like butter. They are available in left or right handed serrated blades as well.
Little more expensive but if you are willing to pay hundreds extra for a detector to make life easier and more convenient why skimp out an extra $20 on a good digging tool which is the hard physical part and save effort and time cutting and digging.
There is a kid on youtube in Florida called “Treasure outdoors” if not at the beach he uses one and cuts a perfect plug with a hinge in like three seconds literally. Flips the plug up uses his pinpointer then just flops the plug back down with the hinge like it was never cut.
He has one of the best techniques ive seen and is the same exact soil i dig.
Watch his park digs and even the beach ones with a sand scoop. He makes it look so easy but he is also probably 30 years younger than me lol

I agree DigDog,

I don't understand the stubborn insistence of using relic shovel use in a public park or sports field. When using a relic shovel, one still has to kneel down to retrieve the target and seat the plug.
It's not that a person can't cut a nice plug with one, it's the optics. One must realize that the practice only draws attention from park employees and the general public who are ignorant to the practice.
The end result is a "no metal detecting" ordinance where none existed before.

I'll agree to disagree; me and my Phoenix shovel has free reign at my local Park, since I cover up other "detectorists" screwed up holes. You'd think Armadillo's had taken over by the looks of some of the tear ups.

The TikTok guys are even worse...

Huge holes.
Not even a square or circle cut.
At a public park out in the open.
Kick the dirt back, one stomp.
Don't even pin point the target just dig a whole, miss, open the sides, miss more till its a complete mess.

I swear they are only in it for the social media money. More and more are popping up and none of them seem.to have any techniques. Just run your mouth the entire video and dig everything.

This hobby will be dead or heavily regulated in no time.

Not so sure its just about the social media and money as much as nowadays alot of people just don’t have the same RESPECT for other people or things.
Its all about them and unfortunately with each new generation it’s worse.
Can’t go to a parking lot without seeing dirty diapers and trash just thrown around everywhere. I understand it’s dirty and probably stinks but in shopping centers or gas stations there are trash cans and if not just put it in the trunk or something until you can get to one.
Again if they really cared you have a plan or system/technique. They carry around clean diapers, wipes etc carry a small container to put it in just in case. I mean really.
I would say it has to do with respect more than greed

90% of my holes are with this
