The art of plug cutting a thing of the past??

Right now I use the Phoenix shovel and cut plugs. The plugs are mostly 4~5" in diameter and once replaced one can hardly see where the plug was dug. Question is; does the plug kill the grass; my personal observation is that it's less of a grass killer than those dug with a hand trowel/shovel.
If you cut a plug not all the way around to make a circle and flop it out on the ground that will make a big brown spotI see way too may people doing this all the time! watch Gary from Xp
he cuts a 3 sided square plug leaving a hinge thats what I do.
