Coil charging clip

Never use coil covers so my clip works perfectly. Also, never wore out a coil although I've heard of it happening.

Steve O, Deus coils come with a cover. Does mean you take yours off??

My cover was off the unit, separate from the coil. If it was on, I would have removed it. I don't like coil covers . . .they get filled up with soil, sand, etc, then they have to be removed and cleaned,
I have never worn out a coil on units with thousands of hours on them . . . so I choose to leave it off.

The coil cover is what aligns the charging clip. While you don't need it to align the clip, not using the cover would make the task more difficult than necessary.
In addition, sliding the clip to align the pins can cause them to bend or break.

Having sand in the coil cover will not reduce the sensitivity of the detector, if that's a reason why you don't like them. Modern detectors aren't plagued by such concerns.

It is possible to cut a bevel on the coil cover where the clip tends to get stuck on. It’s easy and helps guide the charge clip on.
Thank you for the clairification; I have a real problem getting the clip over my cover, clip will not stay on at all without the cover.. Did line the top of the coil with bright reflective tape so I can see it better in the water

Is anyone we interested in a 3D printed design to replace the clip from the original? If so I will spend sometime and design a new clip that will not break and is easy to install.
A great design would be one with a spring clip similar to a cloths pin

you mean like this?

Hard to tell, does that have a hinge in the middle where the connector is or is it fixed? A hinged charging clip that you can squeeze at the top to open and a spring that keeps it closed just like a cloths pin would be great for putting on and taking off without just relying on bending a fixed plastic piece apart.

Click on the photo and you'll see that it hinges on the original plastic tabs but the spring is a huge improvement over the bent piece of plastic that comes on it from the factory.

I did the same thing to my charging clip when the tensioner broke. However, one arm or the other will eventually break near the body.
If you don't already have a backup clip, it would be wise to grab one.

I really like the bevel idea. It took me awhile to realize there is only one way it fits the coil. I tried jamming the clip the first time. I learn fast------well, once in a while. I bought the "other" clip a a backup. Rarely use it though.

Yes that would be great!

I would also be interested.

I think I should get a new 3 way charging cable to carry in the truck. Back up, plus I can charge anywhere if I have it along.

A few years ago XP did a rebuild on the charging clip to make it stronger. I've never had any problem, but I can imagine if you snap it like if your fingers slip off the older version might get damaged. If clip doesn't fit I suspect you have dirt inside the coil cover. As amatter of habit I remove the cover each time I clean the coil. I guees it would be difficul to use without a coil cover.

When did they redesign it, are the ones for the D2 the new design?

Yes, but I have no idea when they redesigned it. It could have been the latter years of the D1 after complaints to XP of the charge clip breaking.
The new design appears to prevent the user from opening the jaw too much which causes work hardening of the plastic hinges.

Sorry about the poor pics, but they get the point across...
Notice the new design has a hinge of twice the thickness of the old. There are a couple other enhancements like the ear just below the hinge on each side is longer, and the charging pins are more robust on the new clip.
However, they have nothing to do with the stiffness of the clip.

Haven’t really had an issue not sure what it is everyone is talking about.
I would think you want a nice snug fit for a good contact otherwise you could have issues, excessive heat, poor charging etc.
I do have an issue with the pinpointer cap being too tight though. You would think it’s glued on even without tightening it down hard
Haven’t had an issue with mine either, works as intended.

I don’t have both to compare as mine resembles the new one in your pictures. The “ears” below the hinges seem to be longer like in your picture of the new one so I assume its the newer style and probably why i have not experienced any problems. although I can’t imagine it being any less robust than what i have and can understand why there would be some problems with the older ones.
