Can targets have no TID?

I have noticed that sometimes I come across an area (salt beach using Beach 1 mostly) where my Eq800 sounds as if there is a target nearby but no TID appears and the target sound location varies in a small area. Once I leave the area the Eq800 settles down. I tried going all metal and other modes/freq including pinpointing but that still didn't help bring in a solid area or any TID. I didn't try to dig the signals since the exact location wasn't discernible. I have put this down to mineralisation in the sand. Any ideas?

cheers...Keith

Short answer to your question is YES.
I have tested buried rings in the sand. There will be a point depending on speed setting and sensitivity setting where tone although weak can be heard but no ID and very likely no depth info in meter.

Using pinpoint can make target sound off.

I have noticed this tendency on salt water beaches myself. A couple of notes here:
Avoid running in auto tracking. Upun repeated sweeps, auto tracking will actually track out your target.
Also, regarding a related issue on salt water beaches is the issue of pinpointing. I have come to the conclusion that on highly mineralized beach sand, the pinpointing algorithm get overwhelmed sometimes.

I find that this can happen often on salt water beaches. Probably in any or most modes. I haven't figured out yet what is happening here. I can understand it if you are running auto tracking, tho. The target just gets auto tracked right out. And if your sens is too high, you will get some false signals as well. I think that on salt water beaches, the detector just gets overwhelmed sometimes. At least this is what it seems like. I have had a lot of targets just "disappear" on attempted recovery in salt water sand. The dirt diggers do not have this problem, it seems. So the prob seems related to salt water sand in some way.
