I tried standing up and using a long handle shovel. It killed my back. Now I kneel and use the shovel to help me up.

Well I thought the COPD was bad but I fell off a ladder and broke my left hip at the end of July. They put in a pin & rod and it took me a few weeks before I could get around but I do OK now out hunting. Getting up seems to be no problem other than a little pain.

The real treasure is in the hunt...

I really don’t kneel. I just bend over. Shovels long enough so all is good. I struggle with both knees. It works out good for me. Adatpt and survive!

Same here. Since starting the hobby in 2010, I have seldom ever gotten down on knees on the ground. My friends have commented, "I don't know how you can bend at the waist and dig like that." The 31" Sampson is a nice crutch though. Gotta adapt.
