What am I doing wrong??

I just got back from a 2 hour hunt. I had permission to hunt an old house that was built around 1900. The take was 5 memorial cents and a clad dime! I had lots of electrical interference so I ran on manual sensitivity at 24. I was also in conductive. I sure am not having much luck on silver this year. Only two mercs and a rosie...What am I doing wrong? Thanks! Ted:rage:

Nothing, have confidence. Just because it’s old doesn’t mean they lost coins there. Did you try the possible old clothes line trick.
Usually the front yard might be better for older coins.

Go slow and keep smiling. When you least expect it good things happen.

Switch to ferrous sounds and run a few silvers under the coil to see if you hear the Explorer warble....a sweet pinging sounding.

Best of luck,

Tony

Thanks Tony and Elton! Tony...I did switch to ferrous. I didn't care for it at all. Elton...I swing my machine low and slow! I hunted the front and sides of the house. Not a very big area. The back yard is huge! Looks like rain for the next week so I will be doing some experimenting and research. Just today I got permission to hunt the property of the first post office in the township. It was there from 1855 till 1887. Maybe the SE will sniff a coin or two out there!!:detecting:

If its really trashy around that house try dropping you sense down to about 19 and hunt slow with the IM at -14 with the rest of the screen open, that has worked for me. You will still get decent depth and it might help with the E.M.I. Just my opinion. GL HH

Thanks! I don't run with the iron mask on as a rule...

If you are hunting wide open in Conductive you are killing yourself Ted. You can really only do that in Ferrous...really.

Thanks Kevin! I will try it again...

I’m certainly not saying that it flat out CANNOT BE DONE,but an operators ears would have to be absolutely UBER TUNED to pick out the variances of a CONSISTENTLY REPEATING COIN vs a CONSISTENTLY REPEATING “something else” that is close, but the tone is slightly too high. Of course, the very highest of tones that coincide with 30 or 31 on the Conductive reading are not usually good targets, but they can blip up to 30 if the target is deep and it can’t get a good bead on it. At least, that’s what IVE found.
Everyone has an opinion on this, but I’ll give you exactly what I use in many places. These places have varying degrees of Conductive trash AND nails,so I had to come up with something that would give me a chance at coins up to 8-9” in the cleaner areas on a pretty regular basis and NOT have me digging trash all day because everything, with settings which are too “hot”,can sound like an “iffy signal”!
AUDIO...VOLUME....Max limits where it needs to be for you be able to hear it clearly. GAIN at 10 if in Semi-Auto,7 or 8 if using Manual.
AUDiO...TONES....Threshold tone 5. VARIABILITY at 10. LIMITS at 10
AUDIO...SOUNDS....FERROUS
OPTIONS...RESPONSE...NORMAL
OPTIONS....RECOVER....FAST and DEEP both OFF
Hunt using the Smart Screen. To begin with, dig anything that shows up in the upper right quadrant of the screen. If you want to dig COINS...don’t waiver on this for now, stick to the rule!
Set the SENSITIVITY to either Semi-Auto 26 or Manual 18-22. This will be completely EMI dependent. DO NOT allow the machine to sit motionless with the coil on the ground not moving and STILL have erratic operation(blipping, cursor jumping around the screen). If it does this even with Semi-Auto chosen, you’ll have to go to Manual Sensitivty and run it lower than 18,but don’t if you don’t HAVE to. Performance starts to fall off quickly below 18.
When I do run wide open(most always) I’ll clear the screen in Discrimination and hunt with that. Then I’ll have the Iron Mask screen set to -6 and if I want to check something,I’ll go to that.
My own personal success has come from having a STABLE MACHINE. Take the time to modify your settings with the above and just give it 10 hours. Going above Manual 22 in almost ALL of my sites,no matter if in the city or country,is detrimental. Most of my work can be done in Semi-Auto 26. Just give it an honest chance. It sounds like although you’ve had the machine for a certain amount of time, you are not the highest level expert. Neither am I,so I don’t try to be. The machine will find it. YOU have to know what it’s telling you,and with the above changes I believe you will do very well...AS LONG AS THE COINS ARE THERE TO BEGIN WITH!
For someone who is having trouble finding coins, this is a starting point. Good luck Ted!

Thanks Kevin! Yes...I bought this machine in 2013. Then I had a brain hemorrhage a month after I bought it. So I only hunt a couple hours at a time now. My hearing isn't the best so I bought the Sunray Pro Gold headphones. My settings I am using now are pretty close to what you have. I do run the threshold a bit higher. I think I am at 13. The sensitivity I can usually get to around 27 but if I get a lot of chatter I go as low as I can which is around 22. I always run in Smart Screen. The cursor and the tone tells me to dig or not. So the major difference is you hunt in ferrous and I have been using conductive. This weekend I may poke around the family farm. The current house was built in 1904 but I have an 1896 plat map that shows there may have been 3 houses on the property. I will use iron mask on and conductive on. Thanks for the tips. People like you make this a great forum! HH! Ted:thumbup:

Ted, in my opinion your thresholdis too high for my liking. I like to run a bit more quiet.
After all the other settings are high and they will get you hear the deep sounds.

Fellas...Just got back from a 1.5 hour hunt at the local school just to do some testing. I could get my threshold down to 10..Any lower and I couldn't hear it. I ran with iron mask on and sensitivity at 27 manual. The result was a nice stable detector. I dug 9 clad quarters, two dimes and 5 memorial cents. Some of these coins were 7" or better deep as there has been a lot of construction there in the last few years. I just need to practice with my new found settings and get ready for the crops to come out in a few weeks. Thanks to everyone for your help! Good luck and HH!! Ted

Terrific and congratulations!

I have lost some hearing and it could be from loud threshold and many other things of course.
You can still go lower and you will still hear coins, silver and gold items but it is your choice. Some advanced books that were written on Explorers it was down to 8.

Make sure to post some cool finds,

Best of luck

Tony
