My Vietnam

I know I’m not a good writer and I misspell words.
My wife worries about me writing this stuff.
I wrote the following yesterday and I’m posting it now, unchanged.

I am not going to lie or exaggerate about my war experience. By sheer luck I was in the right place at all the wrong times.
I clearly saw people getting killed but I wasn’t close enough to engage or help in any way.
I saw dead bodies being thrown into a truck but I didn’t have to touch them or smell them.
I saw a mother begging for money with her starving child laying in front of her too thin to move but I didn’t have to watch it most likely die later.
I also didn’t have to witness the unbearable grieving caused by all of this death.

Well, I still have my humanity.
I just reread the last paragraph, relived it and broke down crying.
I’m back now.
I’m glad I gave you the short version. I could add a whole lot more and still be one of the lucky veterans.
I was never forced to kill anyone and I was never wounded. The closest I came to dying was caused by dirty water.
The gazillion bullets flying around were always over my head.

Don’t call me weak if I have feelings. Call me a sociopath if I don’t.
