I haven't used either and believe both to be great units ... i mostly hunt freshwater so the tiger shark would be my pick... if you hunt saltwater beach in the off season and dont mind digging everything then the surfmaster pi would be the way too go...gotta be willing to dig real deep with the pi..

This is like asking to choose between a tack hammer and a sledge hammer. It really helps to know the task at hand before making the decision.

That being said, I would choose the Surfmaster PI because I like using pulse machines, and I don't like single frequency machines such as the Tiger Shark, at the salt water/ wet sand that I usually hunt.

But if you are planning to hunt fresh water beaches, I would grab the Tiger Shark, as using a pulse machine at most fresh water beaches is a frustrating experience due to the ever present iron trash.

If you are considering a purchase of a waterproof single frequency detector, you may want to wait until the Minelab Equinox series comes out. Even if you have no interest in the Equinox itself, it may depress the price of the waterproof single frequency machines, especially used machines. Even the used waterproof PI machines tend to dip in price mid-winter, and occasionally a barely used detector will show up in the classified forum ads or online auction sites at a nice price.

If you want waterproof discrimination in salt water then your only choices are Minelab's CTX, Excalibur or new Equinox - or

Fisher’s CZ-21.

Of these only the Excalibur and the CZ are proven to be waterproof beyond 10’ I believe.

Herb, My thought is. The Tiger Shark is for fresh water. The Sand Shark is Awesome. I currently have the Surfmaster. It works well. I have been using a Excal mostly.
But all of those machines are quite useable.. The only thing about the surf master 1".
