Finally - some news about the Manta - its the Fisher Impulse AQ

At the huge outdoor business international expo in Munich, Fisher brought along their new water PI and showed it to dealers and distributors - one posted it on his Russian website. Here’s what he wrote.

Fisher Impulse AQ - a new pulse metal detector with metal discrimination! (New 2019, first photos!) BY DETECTORIST · 03/12/2019

Yes, friends, it happened! Fisher Lab has announced its new product - the Fisher Impulse AQ metal detector! A fundamentally new development and, it seems, a revolutionary device in the world of metal detectors.  It was not possible to test much of the novelty, it was hidden at the Fisher Lab stand at IWA Outdoors 2019. Fishers do not like to shout much, but this is what I found out:

1. The novelty is a pulse device, but with discrimination of ferrous metal and gold. Designed specifically to find gold jewelry and small gold chains and earrings. Since this is a pulse device, it will work without problems on any beaches.

2. So far, the metal detector is at the final tests stage, the appearance and some characteristics may change.

3. The metal detector has several search modes - you can shift the detection of the conductivity of metals, for example: you can move the detection towards poorly conducted metals (fine gold) and at the same time eliminate highly conductive targets (large coins of silver and copper), and vice versa - look for large targets and cut off weakly conductive.

4. Tonality: in the “all metals” mode - one tone, then there is the “2 tones” mode and the “mute” mode.

5. The device is assembled from high-strength components, it can be seen through the cable thickness, and through a capacious battery, along the coil connector (the largest connector of all seen!) The metal detector is waterproof up to 1 meter - work up to your neck and lift gold just right.

6. Unusual and mounting the coil to the rod, also a novelty, not seen before.

7. Battery life up to 10 hours. You can connect a larger battery and increase the operating time up to 20 hours.

8. Yes, there is no screen on the device. And why is the screen needed? All the necessary settings are there - volume, threshold tone, iron mask, saturation mode. You can change modes, check the battery level, cut off the noise.

9. Pulse devices have always had a problem - no discrimination. Now the problem is solved and this means that you can walk in all places as if not knocked out.

10. Price. In the region of 2100-2500 US dollars. New technologies cost money, yes, but they also bring an advantage over all other metal detectors.

11. Soon there will be models for searching for gold nuggets, as well as for searching for coins and relics.

12. To the touch the weight is about 1.6-1.8 kg, the balancing is not bad, the device does not pull towards the coil.  My first testing showed that the trash and other targets cut off the sound with a bang, and the gold ring on the finger is very beautiful and pleasant in all positions of the ring! Such a signal is not to be confused with anything.  Well, the first tests will show, the first impression is very pleasant and interesting, waiting for more news!  Video on the metal detector will be very soon, wait!

Firstly Lytle78, I would like to thank you for the update. Finally some info on this detector. I don't know about all of you but I'm excited.

Rich .... wonder where the sweet spot of that coil is? Is just that front fin HOT? That could make PPing easier..... also means .... NO you cant turn that coil around lol. Ive not seen a picture of the back........ but it appeared the battery AND headphones are under or behind the cuff..... am i right? The folks have already figured out how to boost the power on a TDI....... is it possible with this machine to increase voltage to the coil?

The biggest mistake they made is having it only be waterproof to 1 m. It’s a pulse induction detector at a price range of over $2000. Even the equinox and the ATpro are waterproof to greater depths than that. They’re going to miss out on all the marketshare that could be gained by guys that want metal detectors that are completely submersible.

Who wants that? Snorkelers, divers?

Niche within a niche, within a niche

Look at real submersible detectors - CZ21 - never leaks - Excalibur - not so much.

Gold at salt water beaches - one goal - one highly focused design - one reasonable price - in terms of ounces of gold.

If you go deeper the red coil cable would attract sharks. Seriously! (not really)

I think the idea for this unit is awesome and if it can do what they say it can do...kudos.
But this unit has some major flaws...in my humble opinion. I was a designer by trade and to me...this looks like a rush job or the pencils pushers nixed the upgrades. Knobs? On a water unit? Is this 1990 or 2000? The undercuff battery is a great way to balance a unit but that connection sticking out like that is begging it get broke off. The yoke on the coil connection looks weaker than a single bolt connection. Last issue is for 2000+ you’d think the coil would be internal like the CTX. I have owned many Fisher units and still own and use a CZ21, CZ20 and a 1270. I like most of their machines, design and features....I just think there are going to be a lot of returned Manta units.

The coil connection is considerably stronger than the conventional ears. the attachment point on the coil is a U shaped boss going around from side to side.

The headphone connection and the battery to detector connection are robust screw on connections and unlikely to be damaged in any normal usage.

As far as knobs, who wants a screen on a machine designed for one purpose - finding gold jewelry. Everything except iron must be dug. A number on the screen would be of little use even if you could see it with salt stains, brilliant sunlight, etc.

Internal coil wires offer only one advantage in a water machine - slightly reduced hydro drag resistance - the trade off is increased complication and the woes of shaft wear which the CTX exhibits.

No pencil pushers were involved in the design - quite the opposite - the use of top quality components are part of the reason why this thing will sell for the price it will be offered at.

Of course, your opinion and mine differ and that is fine. I do have one advantage, I actually had one for a couple of days. It is beautiful and highly ergonomic.

I have the CTX and the Equinox....glare could sometimes be an issue but have never had a salt stain on either...actually don’t know what that is but seeing as the screens are fine I know I don’t have one.
Concerning the screen...I actually hunt by sound so the numbers are immaterial to me and like you...don’t see a need for a ID system. The comment was directed at the knobs. Every knob is a weak point. A screen could have taken the place of these.
I have no issue with the headphone connection and did not mention it but I do with the battery connection PLACEMENT. It protrudes well past the rod in this picture. If that is how it will be sold there will be broke connections no matter how robust the connection.
My job was to identify issues prior to starting a piece of equipment...it is hard to turn that off.
Your defense of the unit is understandable.

One advantage of knobs is when detecting with a dry suit or anytime of gloves, the dials are so much more easily adjusted then a push button pad.

I'm very excited about the Manta and hope it lives up to the video's and words that have been said, my only hope is they offer a strong warranty to cover such a new machine, at a high price, and not just 1 year. I do know the New Whites TDI beach hunter is offered with a 2 Year. A strong warranty will show Fishers confidence in the New "AQ"
Could be a big factor on many who are watching.
Now waiting for words from Fisher.
