This is a very busy time for their hobby division. I am sure they will get back to you soon. That Sea Hunter XL-500 machine goes back many years.

I see no reason why not. The voltage of each type of cell is 1.2volts.
If you do make the switch, make sure you select NiMH cells with at least the same capacity, mAH rating AND have solder tabs to make the pack easier to assemble. The XL-500 model makes a difference: the PI model of the XL-500 employs 7 Sub-C cells (standard C cells will not into the housing). The VLF model employs three 9V batteries.
Replacing the O-Ring would be advised also when re-assembling the control box.
One last caution: you may need a different charger that is of the correct ratings for the new NiMH cells.

Also, do we have any larger replacement coils for the original Sea Hunters? No coils available

Regarding SeaHunter XL500 battery pack replacement by a DIY'er
1. Can you tell me what the mAh rating of the old nicad pack was?

Garrett part number 9406800 ā€“ Batt. MiMH ā€œCā€ 7 pak is still available.
Voltage 8.4VDC
Normal capacity (@ 5Hr rate): 2800mAh
Normal charge rate: 300mA @16hrs
