External batteries have never bothered me but I've twice lent out my DMC's and had the terminals on the machines broken when the rechargables have run out and they have tried to swap to ordinary PP3 batteries. Other brands as far back as the 1970's have had drop in batteries which have no wires yet are fully protected inside the control box or best I've had, filling the shaft of the detector.

The exposed system has no advantage for me. I have on the old 9v set managed to "crumple" one of the connectors and I am careful with my detectors. Also now the box is under the arm the batteries will come into contact with the ground, this is not good on a muddy ploughed field.
