Went On A Night Hunt And I Got Busted!

I have been way too busy to even think about detecting the last few months, but I finally made some time to get out in the last few weeks. I've been trying to focus more on Civil War relics and getting onto those type of sites. I went back to a spot where I have been finding bullets and I was able to sneak out a few more big .69 caliber 3 ringers and a nice J hook. Right before I was leaving I got a nice signal that turned out to be a pretty rare Wisconsin State Militia button that cleaned up nicely.

So this weekend I got permission for a spot that I researched and have been wanting to get on for a while, It's a good sized property that has an old house built in the 1850's that saw action during The War from both sides and was used a a hospital. I was told the common story that it's been hunted a bunch over the years but I was welcome to hunt it anytime. I stared out late in the evening and right at sunset I got a nice signal and popped out a 1967 Kennedy Half. Only my second silver one of those and it was a nice surprise. Darkness quickly set in and I worked my way to the back hill side of the old house. I started to find some fired bullets and I was having a time getting them out of the hard packed dry soil. We are needing rain in a bad way. I was pretty happy to be finding some lead and then lucked up on a great looking bayonet scabbard tip with the finial still intact. I went back to digging a few bullets and had a signal that rang in about the same but with more of a high tone to it. I was hoping for something good as I chiseled it out and found it in the dark, I could see that it was a tiny coin. I turned my headlamp on and I about did a back flip when I realized it was an 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime! I dug my first one last August and it is pretty slick, this one is pretty sweet. I couldn't focus on anything else as I text my wife and buddies about what I had just found. I did manage a few more fired Williams cleaners but had to pull myself away as it was getting late. I can't wait until we get some good rain and I can spend some more time on this property. HH - David

Geez I found a Walker on Saturday and thought I was doing pretty good! Apparently not...
A Capped anything is my number one item on the bucket list. After that...a gold coin! But being in southern WI,that’s gonna be tough. Not unachievable, but certainly tough. That’s a hell of a nice coin Dave, and the Kennedy adds some weight! Outstanding site selection and hunting!!

Congrats on finding that Capped half dime Dave. Just gotta love those "hunted out" spots. lol I can't wait to hit them when I hear that. Always a nice challenge to see if you can find what others might have missed. Looks like they missed a whole bunch at that site. Love that scabbard tip and all the rest of that awesome haul. Very hard to find them complete.

Thanks Greg! Yeah it’s hard to get it all but I wasn’t expecting to find much and I’m always up for the challenge as well. It’s a big bonus to save these little pieces of history. Good luck out there to ya bud!

Hi Dave!...fantastic evening's finds.....congrats.

You have inspired me to reveal a personal-prophecy...??????

During my 50 years of detecting and technical investigations of the sciences involved in the hobby, I formed a theory;

Often, due to circumstance of working hours, I did a lot of late evening testing etc., on my garden in general, and its associated, mature, test-beds

I was amazed how the targets for some reason, appeared to be more 'sparkling' in their response!

Also, I often heard signals that were not apparent in general day-time sweeps.

I concluded, that it was related somehow, as being due to fact that the sun had set.

I have not been able to deduce why....perhaps surface-'ground-temperature'...????

Anybody out there, with an opinion on this phenomena….Has anyone ever been aware of the situation?......matt

p.s.

Did I read somewhere that you used a NEL THUNDER for your E-Trac?

If so, then that's another story...matt

Hey Matt, I like your theory but you will have to take into consideration the Blood Moon that was out that night as well. That had to throw off the Earth’s gravitational pull and brought some of these finds closer to the coil. My brain is way too simple to do anything other than get a beep dig a hole and I am using the Ultimate 13 but would love to try a NEL coil to see how they compare. But my theory has always been if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

I’m curios to see what others have experienced with night hunting signals vs day time ones. Thanks and good luck to you in your research, I hope it pays off for you in a big way.

Stellar finds Dave! congrats on the cap bust. I only know one person from my area that got cap bust at an old church years ago. very rare.
The 67 Kennedy 40% is hard to come by also.

Thanks Dave! I imagine there's a few bust coins up your way. I hope you get your coil over one soon.

Awesome finds all the way around... as far as night time hunting being more productive and the moon influenceing finds ,ya ,could be something to it.. i believe my ears become more sensitivite at night because my eyes have nothing to focus on..

Thanks! I know moisture can play a big role on signals. I imagine temperature could have an effect as well. Might be some cool science behind day time and night time effects on signals.
