Can you use iron discriminate in all metal mode with iron audio off when using AT Max?

When in doubt, read the user manual. I don't know about the Max, but on the Gold the answer is No. There is no iron discrimination in All-Metal mode, just a tone to alert you that the target is iron if you have the Iron Audio on and you have it adjusted to whatever number, it will only sound off the iron tone when the target is below that number. So you still hear all targets no matter what.

You can hunt that way if you want, but the detector will pick up ALL metal. You HAVE to use the iron audio, adjusted as such, to hear detected ferrous targets, low grunts, if that's what you want. Otherwise it's just hunting in all metal, no discrimination. That's my understanding.

I think I can answer this - No

All Metal by it's definition is just that - any metal will provide a tone - Mono Tone to be exact if Iron Audio is off.

Turning Iron Audio, if Iron discrimination at 00 will do nothing to the Mono tones.

If the iron discrimination is set to a higher number (let us say 25 for example) it will cause an iron grunt if the target reads anywhere from 00 to 25 indicating the nature of the target is in the iron range and Mono Tone for anything reading above 25.

I think the trick is to find an old iron target in the ground like an old nail, Test what Descrim number it disappears at and set you Iron descrim level there.

Any signal above that could be a good target

I am new at this guys- let me know if I got it wrong...Thanks

I can't explain it much better than i already did. Discrimination means the target does not make any sound. All targets make some sound all the time in the All-Metal mode. If you turn on Iron Audio and set the number say to 35, then any target below 35 (like nails) will make the low tone. But it still makes a sound. If you turn Iron Audio off the nail will make a medium tone like all other targets. It ain't that difficult to understand. Maybe just try it out? Or watch the training video. If the Max does not have any videos you can watch the AT Gold video.

No, it ain't a "must see" unless you want to watch somebody who can't figure out how to use it right. It must really burn his rear that Garrett has been the best-selling brand for years and years.

That's funny why don't you buy a go pro and show us how to do it.... like I told you on the other forum I don't care about sales I don't own stock in any detecting company. When the new mine lab comes out I will have one of those too. Whatever works the best for I do is what I want to use.. When you get your video posted on how to use discrim and iron audio in all metal mode please contact me and we will talk about for the world to see. The at max has discrim in all metal please tell us how to use it and what its for! The usual rant when someone shows something that you don't like about their favorite detector ( THEY DONT KNOW WHAT THEIR DOING, HES SPREADING PROPAGANDA ) that was funny but as it always is no one puts forth a video to contradict what I showed. WHY? because what I showed is true! it is what it is.....my results in my garden maybe yours will vary.

In a sense, yes, you use iron discriminate in all metal mode. But, you use it differently.

You turn on Iron Audio and set a value in iron discriminate. The manual uses a value of 35.

Then you turn off Iron Audio and detect in All Metal. If you detect a target that is throwing a low number that you suspect as being iron, you then turn on Iron Audio and swing over the target. If it is iron, the Max adds an iron grunt before and after the all metal tone.

Try it and see if this helps. I did and liked the result.

Iron Disc level is NOT disc in all metal but rather a tone break and iron tone range IF iron audio is enabled.

I see it the same way.

Iron Audio in All Metal is not discrimination but an expanded audio (2 tone) information, that can be used by the operator to apply Hes/Hers level of discrimination on the reported target signal.
