As a new user, I am really appreciative of the helpful tips afforded by all of you XP masters. One thing I've noticed is a variant approach among the successful posters regarding how much discrimination to use. Some of you prefer to use little or know discrimination while others prefer to hear only the large iron. As someone who's done a lot of relic hunting, I can understand the "little discrimination" approach such as the sifter where all tones(even iron) are your friend and a good tone next to iron can be acctcenuated by hearing the iron. But as someone who's also done a lot of coinshooting in very trashy areas where you know that 90% of what you hear is modern junk and listening to it alone becomes laborious, wouldn't some judicious increased discrimination be merited especially if iron is not a major problem in these areas. One thing I've learned to do over the years, is to ALWAYS use a low discrimination setting when I first start swinging a new site in order to profile the trash content then adjust accordingly. Thanks a million.

I relic hunt I use a discrim of 1 all the time but thats just my style. I understand others like to run a quieter program and some of the sites that have modern trash I would sometimes like a quieter life too but thats just the way I hunt lol.

Lower discrimination can help with separation/unmasking performance.

LT, I think you have a good approach to Discrimination. I typically hunt with no or low discrim, but there are times when a judicious amount discrimination will definitely help the cause. We all like to think our brain is the best discriminator, but sometimes you can overload your circuits and miss that peep of a good tone.

Same here as well, I use 1-5 for discrimination, I like to hear when there is iron around. What's the point of investing a good chunk of change on a detector if you're not going use all the information it's giving to your advantage?
