"coil not detected" message

Today, after about 30 minutes hunting, I got a loud audible buzz sound and "Coil not detected" was on the screen. No other sounds, no targets, just the message. Did a 'restart' back to default settings, did two power offs and back on, and after each restart and power up, after 30 seconds or so it would show the message. Deliberately bumped the coil a bit+ on the ground to see if it was something loose but no change in the signals.

Took the coil off and swapped it with my hunting buddy's CTX coil, and it gave the same "coil not detected' signal. I used his coil on my power head and there was no problem. It worked like a charm. I did not take the coil itself off and swap it and use the screen and power module, just took the battery compartment unit off the shaft and used the two cables there to connect back up.

I pulled the shaft apart, and took off the power module and checked all the cables, no visible problems anywhere. No bent pins or corrosion or anything that I could think that would have caused the issue. So back to the dealer tomorrow to send the coil in. The small cable, I dont know if it goes to the coil or the screen, was a bit kinked right where it connects to the power module, but no wear indicators or tears.

Anyone got any answers or suggestions for a fix without sending it back in???

Gonna use the Etrac for awhile again I guess.

If you can't fix it and it sounds like you tried call them and Minelab will send you a return label. 877-767-6522

Your coil on your CTX gave the "coil not detected" signal?
When you took your coil off and put it on your buddy's CTX, it gave the same "coil not detected" signal?
And when you put your buddy's coil on your CTX, it worked OK?

If the answers to those questions are all yes, it appears to be a problem with your coil or something in the coil cable assembly. A "coil not detected" message appears when the smart coil cannot communicate with the detector control housing. I've not encountered this on the CTX, but on another detector I have with smart coils, it has been due to a bent pin on the coil connector. Sometimes when we screw on the coil cable connectors, we put pressure on the pins before we have them aligned. That causes one of the pins to not insert properly into the hole on the other half of the connector, possibly giving the message you received. Make sure all those pins are straight and will align perfectly with the female connector. If one or more of them are bent, they can be easily straightened out with a toothpick and some patience. If the pins are aligned and everything else checks out, it is likely a problem in the coil or the cable. JMHO HH Randy

After more than 46-years of detecting, and having owned dozens of different detectors, I've come to the conclusion that maintaining success in the field is largely dependent on three things..... choice of site, acquiring a proper skill set for the detector and the detector itself..... in that order. Research, practice and persistence. There are no substitutes.

Yeah, I checked all the pins when it first happened. I visually checked both the male and female parts and there were no visible issues. Then, I tried several different ways, screwed them tight, left them a bit loose and still the same response. All I did in the field was slide the battery module back a few inches and apart slightly and then connect another CTX power module to my shaft and acreen and coil. Same response.

But, today I did it correctly. I took the coil off the shaft (pulled the coil and cable off my machine) and then attached a coil from my dealers CTX to my shaft, battery module and head unit. It worked perfectly so I am asuming it is the coil. I just sent a text to the dealer to get him to hook up my old coil to his shaft, battery module and head unit and see if he gets the 'coil not detected' message. The dealer is going to let me use his coil while mine is sent back to Minelab!

Now I am going to leave it on afor an hour or so to see if it 'heatrs up' and causes an issue.

I visually went over all the coil and there are no areas where anyone could reasonably think there was wear or kinks, or anything that could create a failure. No chips or damage to the coil at all.

Now if Minelab would just send 3 or 4 small coils to my dealer it would be great!! We have been waiting for 8 weeks for small coils!

That's so funny cause I just posted a new post about me having the exact same issue. What are the odds

How old are both of these units? Or should I say how many hours do each of you have on them?

I got mine about July 1, or thereabouts, and have about 400 hours, or so, on it. The coil did give the same message response on the dealers machine, after 30 seconds. After over an hour on mine with a different coil all was well and I put in about 5 hours yesterday, Tuesday, with it and no issue. In fact I think (imagination maybe) I was getting somewhat better depth and ID with the different coil.

Why in the world are there no small coils available except from Kellyco or other major dealers? I would love to support my local guy but have been waiting for a long time now!! I hunt really trashy, iron infested house demolition areas and the small coils would be a great aid.

My dealer has the smaller and larger coils.

My coil and a friend i swing with both have coils that started having very similar problems. His coil died last summer and my coil followed suit a few months ago. I am currently working on a process to repair it. I hope i will be able to offer it as a service to other detectorists with the same problem. 350$ is a lot og money for a new coil!! Has anyone else had any luck getting one repaired?

No, not sure if cable breaks or water enters on strain relief.

i have had several fail.

i now have a collection of 2nd hand coils just in case.
