Hello All.

I went out this morning wanting to get a hunt in before it freezes up next week in here Connecticut. I was blessed with my oldest and best find ever! 1812 half dollar. Found this beauty 5 inches down with my trusty Mx sport! Coin and jewelry mode 5 threshold and 5 sensitivity.

Good luck all, happy hunting!

Very nice find! What does it look like all cleaned up?

That's an exciting find, with amazing detail. If it could talk I'd like to know how such a lightly circulated 1/2 was lost. The 1/2 dollar was THE (U.S.) silver coin of the realm back then. Dollar production was halted in 1803 and and it took a 30+ years before they were produced again. Don't be fooled by the famous 1804, the storied15 or so produced were not struck until about 1834. That left your 1/2 dol as the king of U.S. silver coins. Samplings of spills and caches (and written records) show predominantly Spanish colonial silver circulating as the U.S. mint struggled to meet demand, finally acquiring a steam press in 1836, perhaps from Birmingham England if I recall. You were more likely to find a 4 or 8 real than that 1812....the 4's are scarce. I'm babbling on, I love your 1812!
Congrats!

Thank you ... I love it too! Still shocked that I found it. I was plugging along and the Mx Sport gave a solid half vdi. I said ok, two quarters or junk! It's always something like that for me. Opened that plug and saw the rim. I had no idea of what i've I found till I got home. When I washed it off and look it up it really felt good to have a piece of history in my hand, and to share it with a community of folks who appreciate it. It's cool to hold something that someone dropped over 200 years ago!

Thanks for all the nice feedback!

Happy new year and hunting!

Jim
