Walker Half and 1883 Shield Nickel

Hello All,

Found some local road construction, Not easy hunting; I think they used foundry slag under some the sidewalks that were dug up, almost impossible detecting conditions

As always, finding a big silver is fun.

I think this is only my third or fourth shield nickel. It looks like it might be an 1883/1882 over strike.

Also found a flat button that was heavily damaged, some of the back mark is readable, I suspect this is 1820s or earlier.

And a very worn dime I found up in MN. I thought it might be Bust, but enough of the back is legible to rule that out.

I took a bunch of pictures of these with my USB microscope that I was going to post. It really does show a lot more detail, but the pictures are too big to upload until I figure out a good way to resize them.

Thanks,

Chris(SoCenWI)

Nice job, never hunted a tearout, i am guessing timing has to be just right. Ive been watching one still in the planning stage, and I think it's going to reveal many goodies due to the history, age of the community and the age of the road.

Love to talk to some tearouts experts.

BT,

Many of my best/oldest finds have come from tear outs. Kind of sad, knowing that all sorts of goodies have been loaded on dump trucks and sent who knows where? Basically the best spots are where they've scraped off a few inches of soil but left the underlying intact. I did a park in my home town when they scraped off four inches to do a kiddie playground. Amazing number of old coins came out, and this place had been detected a million times.

Very nice finds!

Fear is paralyzing and courage is liberating. No matter what is put in front of you, there is always a way to make it work.

Dreams are just dreams, goals are dreams with deadlines. The desire to succeed comes from within. Stay focused on your goals, and if people say that you can’t do something, get them out of your life and move on.
