10.5" DD

I traded my stock coil for a 10.5" dd pretty much because so many of you use one and love them.
I'm not so sure I care for it. I had been searching with the Digger for most of the morning and decided to try the 10.5. I got a signal that I felt sure was a penny with ID at 32, marked it and switched over to the bigger coil. My ID was now 8 and it turned out to be junk. Now normally I would think that's great but I never seemed to get a good solid signal with this coil for the next 1/2 hr. I switched back to the Digger and started finding coins again.
To be fair I buried a coin about 4" deep and the 10.5 picked it just fine.
Should I keep trying this coil?

Sounds to me like trash density was too high for that coil at that site. They really are a good coil, but like the others it has it's place.

Bill, give it some time to get use to it.

The 10.5 MF DD coil is the only coil I've used in the past 7 1/2 years, I love it.

There is a ton of trash here. Pulltaber I'll think about it but I really want to give it a chance, thanks so much for the offer.
I'm hoping it does the trick for me at the older parks in town.

Im looking to purchase one so if you dont like it let me know! thanks. would love to give it a shot!

Like everyone else said, give it some time. I know when I got from the 6" Coiltek back to the 10.5" it take a little getting used to again. I've found thousands of coins with the 10.5" coils so don't give up. Both of them work very well but in my soil, the MF goes a little deeper.

My experience is: The 10.5 DD is much better than the 9" concentric in trashy areas but when the trash gets to be too much the 6" coiltek shines. I have gone back and re-hunted some very trashy areas I have hit hard with the 10.5 and pulled lots of coins, usually with some sort of iron in the same hole. The big DD is excellent at separation but it still can't segregate as well as that little digger in HEAVY trash. I love them both, just have to use the right one in the right spot. Also, I turned my BIG coil around backwards and it helps bunch with the balance. I don't know why Minelab doesn't put the mounting ears in the middle.

Ya... I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss that coil... it rarely leaves my machine! Go slow... double check signals in an X pattern... learn the tonal variations of different targets and you will be smiling! It is such a superior coil to the 9" concentric that I have a hard time mentioning them together in the same sentence!

Bill I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on the 10.5" MF coil too! Mark got me thinking as he finds some great stuff using the 10.5" MF exclusively. I was doing a 'dime between 2 large nails' test and the stock coil wasn't very good at separating the dime until the nails were at least 3-4" away. My 18.75khz 6" DD coil did great, and got good solid tones on the nail and dime in between. Even when nearly touching the dime, the combined tone of the nail and dime was a good mid-high tone that I would definitely dig. The stock coil is not going back on my XT after seeing these results (and having mostly13-14 phase #s in my ground). I know the smaller coil is a huge factor, but the 6" DD still did much better than my 7.5 khz 6" concentric did on this test. I was hoping to use the 6" HF to hit all the super trashy spots first, then go back over with the MF 10.5" DD and find the deeper stuff. I'm sure the 10.5 will rock once you get used to it. If I remember correctly, you weren't that pleased with the digger coil when first using it either? Keep us posted. HH, Scott

Scott,
I do like the Digger. I was getting good signals this wkend and pulling up nails and small brads. Scan the hole again and there would be a wheat in the hole. I will keep trying the 10.5 then let you know.

Re the 10 inch DD coil ,
don't put it under water.not even say 3 inches,
it is not waterproof at all,
just bought a 9 inch spider coil which is water proof.
kev.

Not really fair.
