Amazing silver day (4-5-14) and found my first 3 cent piece ( actually two in the same hole)

I had an incredible day of detecting! Always follow your gut instinct. Had I not, I would of never have found what I did. My original plan was to go to a local school and just coin shoot. Half way there, I realized I forgot my digger. So back home I went. After throwing the digger in the car something inside of me was telling myself to hunt a local park. I been to this place a gazillion times. Why not once more? lol. This time I decided to hunt the woods near a little stream. Parked my car, headed to the stream, crossed over and started climbing up a hill in the woods when I received my first decent signal. It IDd at 64. (Using an AT Pro) I was thinking it was a pulltab... I almost didnt dig it up... but once again, my gut feeling told me to dig. At first I thought they were the little play time tokens that kids fool around with. Then I saw the Roman Numeral III on one side. But then I thought to myself, it cant be I tossed them into my pocket and continued up this little worn out (tiny) path going up the side of the hill. Further up I hit on a merc and a roosevelt. At this point I was thinking to myself, all these years I have hunted this place and they were right over the brook lol I also stumbled onto a few homeless tents. Junk, garbage and toilet paper ughhhh I didnt dare go any further up towards the homeless community. I felt it was best to give them their space and I would head back over the stream and head up the other hill. Just as I was climbing the hill I hit a nice merc dime. (by the way all these coins were shallow 2-4 inches at most) At the top I am just scanning all over. Then pop, pop two more silver dimes, a barber and a merc! I also found a neat token called, The greenduck company I also found a religious token and a ladies brooch. The Brooch wasnt all that far from the two 3-cent pieces. I never thought in a million years that I would find one of these little coins and they are SMALL! What I found: I have an 1851 and 1852 so this is Variety 1. I am very tired after climbing all these hills for 4 hours and I know I will sleep good tonight. Sometimes we just need to go hunting outside of our comfort zones and hunt the wood sections of our old parks. Heck, I cant tell you how many times I have hunted all the "grass areas" of this park. Woods hunting is fun!

I'd kill to find just one 3 center and you find two in one hole, WOW! When your hot your hot :hot::hot: Outstanding finds!

Most amazing, it's the kind of day you will never forget!! Three years ago I did the same thing with amazing results too. I parked my car and instead of searching the lawn I took a chance and walked into a small patch of thorny woods behind the parking lot. Found about seventeen 1800's coins in about 6 times there. Most were IH pennies, a seated dime, standing lib quarter, V nickel, and a silver 3 cent. Could be more stuff there but the thorns are too thick. Till today I still wonder why they were there in that small wooded area.

Congrats on those finds, especially the pair of trimes. I have found only one in all these years of hunting old home sites.

Great day for you! Congrats. Last year I found 2 half reales in the same hole. That makes for an exciting day. Way to go.

what a day you had. you really cleaned up. amazing finds, congrats. HH

Thank you all for your kind words. I am baffled they have never been found as this place has been beaten to death ever since detectors have been in existence. I don't live that far away so it is convenient if I only have a couple of hours to hunt. There really isn't much left to be desired in the lawn areas but the woods surrounding the park is another story! I can safely say 98% of hunters would keep driving by thinking there isn't a penny left...and I will let them believe that :)

Randy,I feel relieved knowing you live in CA lol

Wow Jabbo that is an amazing amount of oldies! What possessed you to go there? Did you have an inner gut feeling / something lead you to take that chance? Did you have an "inner calling?" Some questions can never be answered ( as to why) but glad you decided to hit behind the parking lot. This is the closest thing man will ever have to a time machine.

Earthly,
On that day when I went to the park again I wasn't feeling too enthusiastic about finding anything in the cut lawn so I figured I'll try the small wooded area near my car. It didn't look inviting at all but it's in the park, nobody goes into those woods for any reason. In no time I found an IH penny, I was shocked at finding any kind of coin there. Then another IH penny and another. Went back the next day and found more IH plus the seated dime. I was having fun. After about 6 visits I couldn't get any more coin signals and haven't been back. If all those thorn bushes weren't there I'm sure I could find more. That tiny (300Ft.x 600 Ft.) wooded area has got to be the best spot I ever found, so far. Then I searched another section of the park, again close to where my car was parked, no trees but kind of weedy and where nobody goes. Found a well worn Spanish half real, seated dime, Merc, IH penny, British colonial penny, and a few modern coins. More fun. Across the road in yet another weedy section of the park (was a crop field years ago) found another 3 cent silver, plus about 8 British colonial pennies. The British troops were camped there at times. You just never know till you try those uninviting places. Jabbo

There's no telling what was there decades or a century ago. In New England, there's no place people haven't been and lost things. Good job taking a chance and having it pay off.

Thanks Floyd. However I feel I am one of the few that do know what was here since 1840. I had to research a lot of old newspaper articles to find the info. I just thought all these coins were long gone from being discovered by detectorists. I mean this place has been literally scrubbed with detector coils since they have been invented. So it just baffles me how many people with detectors walked right over them. - Jim

Congrats on such great finds! And interesting story as to why you decided to hunt that area that day. Now it has me thinking about a park near me I have hunted many times (in my short 11 month detecting career that is) and it has a creek flowing through it with some woods along the creek and in one area something pretty old looking where the creek had been diverted...maybe for crops? I dunno but I've been wanting to hunt those areas and did just one brief time but the little tree's were so thick it was difficult getting around but boy I sure wanna get back in there now. People always gravitated towards the water. Nice job!

Thanks McClod. You are right - humans have always been attracted to water for a variety of reasons. Just a suggestion - use a small(er) coil so you can maneuver between rocks and trees. Best of luck - Jim

Thanks for the tip Jim! Good idea, soon I'll be getting a smaller coil and do what you did, hunt outside the box! Really enjoyed your story!
