Factors Affecting PI Detection Range.

Pulse Induction is unique in that the transmit and receive operations occur at separate times and therefore the transmit current can be increased without running into balance problems as you would with Induction Balance detectors. However, to get any significant range increase the current has to be increased quite dramatically e.g. if you doubled the transmit current you would only get about a 12% increase in range; if you had 8 times the current you would expect 40% more range; and if you wanted to double the range you would need to increase the current 64 times. Things would really be running hot by now and you would an expensive power transistor, fan cooled heatsink and a few car batteries in tow. The search coil would also need to be watercooled. I did all of this in a special boat towed detector for Mel Fisher in the 1980
