streets of Beaufort, NC. The town was settled in the late 16 early 1700's. I found this under the street next to the oldest cemetery in Beaufort.

...in floral patterns, etc, cast in white metal with the same screw holes in the back. These were in an abandoned ghosttown cemetary dating from the late 1800's.
Below is a link to an interesting article on "white bronze" produced exclusively by Wilson, Parsons & Company of Bridgeport Connecticut for manufacturing monuments and ornaments (1870). These were shipped throughout the USA and Canada.
It is interesting that you found this figure outside the boundaries of the cemetary. As was the case at the time, coloured folk and criminals were most often buried outside the churchyards. Currently there is a developement project going on here in London at the site of an old cemetary. Althought all known graves were relocated years ago, they have just uncovered 20 or so more that were not within the original boundaries.
