Is it possible?

I was out at my favorite site doing a little digging. I was in an area that had some known hut sites on it. The dozers had pushed a little dirt around and I noticed this sticking half way out of the ground. Looks to me to be part of a hut or possible fence. The other end was flattened by the dozer. The piece I have is about 7'long. It is also unusually heavy for it's size. Is it possible for a piece like this to have survived that long in the ground? Is there a way to tell for sure? Any info would be appreciated.

Did you find that in Halltown? If so, have you noticed all of the barbed wire that's in the ground? Do you think what you found is from that fence? Just a thought!

I would say that it is possible. Is the other end broken or rotted off? Also if you wash the big end off a little and post a picture I might be able to tell if it was cut with a crosscut or a chain saw. I am suspecting a hand saw of some type. The notch also looks good. I would have kept it too...d2

growing up, we used yellow locust for bridge supports. The ends would be buried under the ground
and would last and last. We removed them to make a
bigger bridge. They would get so hard that a saw
blade would spark as you tried to cut them. Red
cedar as well as some oaks, have the same qualities.
Evidently the wood "seals" itself.
Too, under the right soil conditions, just about
any wood will survive harsh conditions. Richardntn

I was out there on sat. morning ,Hunted till about 11:00 . all i found there was four bullets and one button in bad shape. you cant hardly tell if its an eagle, so i left it encrusted with mud. if i clean the mud off it will probably fall apart,LOL.They have moved that site arround a lot since i was there last.Hey do you think that post was a hitching post for there horses, it does kinda look like it is a locust post.and they do get harder with time in the ground, as long as the ground has good drainage.i just wanna know one thing. Did you carry that post all the way back to your truck , or bring the truck to the post?LOL ..........Have a great day.........................HH................Ed

John:
Had to look at a lot of CW pictures of huts but I think it's possible. Looks like the saw cut in your piece is perpendicular to it's length. This happens in hut construction only around openings such as windows and door frames. Most cuts I saw were simple "Vs" made by axes in the logs. If you look at the enclosed picture taken during the summer at Petersburg you could imagine your piece fitting where the marked pole is if the outside perpendicular was a piece of milled wood so that the base of the tent could be nailed to it.

What do you think? Still waiting for my copies of your pulled bullet with indentation in nose.
