lots of trash

I've been using my xterra 505 for a couple of months now, read Randy's book. I think I'm doing real good with it, finding silver and coinage. Last Sunday went to a old building, man the 505 was going crazy, #42, 48, 36, allover the place. used x pattern then # would drop to -9, 8. Then i talk to grounds keeper, building has burned to the ground twice in 200 yrs. I found a lot of square nails, old building supplies. Is this why the 505 was going crazy . I know it's not broke because we went to another field and she acted normal, dimes.pull tabs .Is this normal.I'm still learning.

Sounds like high mineralization/possible EMI. Burned down buildings always are hard to hunt. Did you try reducing sensitivity?

That's one thing i didn't do, lower sensitivity, I had it right about 15 ,the factory setting. But thats interesting burnt out buildings play havic with machines. Is that do to the amount of trash left behind. My buddy with a at pro had the same problem. I'll lower the sensitivity next time.

Yes go as far down as 9 senstivity to calm down jumping TID numbers. Also use one of the X-Terra 6" coils(the HF DD or MF CC)for those trashy areas.

As far detecting in charcoal(from burnt wood) of course it gets your detector, hands, & clothes black & dirty, but also here is a little information about PI detectors in charcoal, it may also apply to VLF's:

It is a myth that carbon/charcoal interferes with Pulse Induction detectors. This myth was started when it was discovered that in areas where there was a recent wildfire it was difficult to detect. The real reason this is a problem is not because of the trees that were burned and turned to carbon, in fact it is because the heat from the fire causes the minerals in the ground to change molecularly and as a result they interefere more with the detector. If you don

Live and learn, Thank's makes sence about the ground heating up and changing. I'll lower sensitivity

Discriminate notch segments 48,-08,-06 for 705 anyways. Switch to AM mode if your second guessing any high beeps. Swing slower also but not to slow. Listen for even tones from both directions of sweep. Wear headphones even if cheapo ones. Have patients. I would not start off in a highly trashy area first. You have to build up to those areas. I am going with a 6 inch coil to help cherry pick through the trash a little area. I am finding rusty nails about 10-15 per square foot. Also take a big magnet and rake through the dirt and drag the magnet around if possible.

You also may be fighting hot rocks from the old coal furnace. Sounds like a tough site, but putting forth the effort may pay off. A good target should be stable and repeatable in most cases, a small coil may be preferable.

I have tried to detect old houses and camps which either burned to the ground or else were allowed to cave-in on themselves and in every single case even when using a 6" coil, it was all but impossible to pull any coins out from where the actual buildings once stood. To me removing all the trash on the off chance I might find a few coins just wasn't worth it. Have pulled a few wheats out from the general vicinity of these buildings, but no silver yet.

Wow I run my X70 between 23-29 and it gets deep coins in all metal a good tavern will usually stand out in normal trash. Does anyone think I may be missing stuff?

I was also out today in a sandy volleyball court with sensitivity between 23-29 (ground balanced and noise cancelled) and most of the coins i got today would give one or two beeps mostly in the +28 to +44 non ferrous side but many more beeps on that target at -6 to -8.... I would dig it to get a nickel, dime or quarter and then would re scan the hole to see if there was any trash around that gave me those minus signals but there was no signal at all after i removed the coin (the volleyball court was really trash free) what would cause all the minus signs as at that point?____ i started digging all minus signs that gave one beep on the positive side with good results in coins?______

Ditto on that. I've only been hunting now about 4x's. At first I did not dig, but after getting bored just swinging I started to dig those TID's that were jumping around like you said and I'm getting clad. It very well may be my sensitivity is too high, I'll try lowering that on my next hunt..

Anyone. When lowering sensitivity, does that also restrict detection at depth?

SLOW DOWN! Your machine is processing a HUGE amount of information, and it needs time to accurately do so. Often TIDs change as the machine gets a better look at the intended target.
And, often a shifting TID is a result of not sweeping directly over the object. I can easily get a TID of 46 on the fringes of rusty iron, but in subsequent sweeps it's found to be what and where it really is.

Hunting in All Metal mode is a good way to learn what sweep speed is appropriate.

I've slowed down to a snails pace and still get bunches of the negative beeps/tid's with the occasional positive/tid's when over a coin....... it must be the wet sand of the volleyball court ( been raining here in arizona) because it doesn't do it anywhere else unless it's a trashy place......... what confuses me the most is that after i pull the coin out of the wet sand and run the coil over that area there is no more negative beeps/tid's.... so may be a combination of wet sand and a coin is sending back some negative signals/tid's...... I need more practice but the hunt is so much FUN :detecting:

Even though it is wet where you're hunting, it sounds like you may be running a bit hot. That can be caused by having your Sensitivity up too high or having an improper ground balance. Usually, if it is the GB, it is set to positive. To run it more negatively, raise the GB number by pressing the + pad while in GB mode. Any chance you're running with a HF coil? DD or concentric? HH Randy

Thanks Randy..... I'll try setting the sensitivity way back... I was set between 25-27 and had no chatter even up at 29 but i will try bringing it way back to the mid teens somewhere and see what that does..... I'm using the stock concentric coil and want to get a HF DD coil but xmas comes first and i want as much experience with the stock coil as i can get.
Now GB was set on automatic w/ground tracking on and i reset it to auto every 10 minutes or so..... so if i'm reading your response correctly i would set it manually and raising the numbers with the + plus sign will make it more negative? .... I have yet to try to set GB manually and will give that a try.
Thanks a lot for all your help.

Jreb: Are you saying i would be better off with a DD High?

this is a great forum :beers:

Its all about the hunt I have a union bayonet a us buckle a confederate I button my best coin is a 1866 or67 nickel with the rays but the hunt is like church in a way you your machine and endless possibilities you can never tell til you dig it

Just something about putting on those headphones getting away from everyday stresses and diggin in the earth is very relaxing to me no matter what i dig up...... It could be a nail but i'm still excited..... this is a new hobby to me and exactly what i needed.
