Need opinions on G2 & GB Pro DP Egronomics

I'm going to purchase a G2 or GB Pro but was leaning towards the G2 because it has the pistol grip handle (which is similar to a couple of T-handle grips I've used), that was until I read a few forum comments about the G2. One person said he decided on the GB Pro because he said the pistol grip handle on his Omega flexed too much for his liking, and that the G2 had the same type of handle. That has been the only comment I've seen regarding this. Has anyone else noticed this?

Another person mention that the area where the control head connected to the handle was weak and had broke, but I also read where a GBSE owner said his broke at the same place. Anyone had this problem? Are both control heads mounted with the same kind of hardware? If so, the question is mute.

Lastly, I heard that the G2 tended to fall over easier (I assume while retrieving the target) than the GB Pro because the control head is mounted higher on the pistol grip which raises the center of gravity. This is of some concern but less so than the other two because I plan on modifying/extending the headphone jack to come out the end butt cap which should help to minimize tipping. I own a CZ3D and GB2 and both of them fall over often which in annoying and they have the S-handles. Anyone noticed that either one of the detectors seem to tip over easily while retrieving a target?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Gary,
Both are excellent machine as they have same inside. Both are so light and well balanced the pistol grip is int really that big of a difference. Since the G2 is a bit taller it can be easier to tip. I always lay mine on the side anyway so its not a big deal.

Feel free to contact me for questions or a smoking deal on either!

The Teknetics T2 was designed with its own unique and comfortable grip handle. The Tek. Omega used the T2 grip, and the G2 uses the same grip and rod design as the Omega. This is one of the most comfortable used, and as I wrap up my 47th year of detecting, I have tried almost all of them.

I have a good friend, my '#2 Detecting Buddy', who is rather rough on her detectors. She got started in '86 and works mainly ghost towns and such and followed her parent's example. That is, they don't care how dirty or abused their detectors get. I know a few others who are much the same way.

Well, I am the opposite because I have seen what excess dirt and mud and abuse can do to a detector, and it's all negative  Instead, I pamper my detectors. I have see many different brands that have suffered some crackage or breakage where the control box or control pod connect to the rod or handle. In most cases it has been caused by poor operator handling.

With these lighter-weight modes, the 'flexing' issue is usually noticed when the detector sis worked with a too-fast sweep speed. These are dedicated two-filter types that work well with a slow motion operation. A brisk sweep speed and an abrupt change-of-direction can cause the flexing feeling. Personally, I do not have a problem with either my G2 or Omega.

Again, the main causes would be possible abuse. maybe cramming them in a trunk with a lot of gear or something. The typical trend in modern detector designs has seen a shift to plastic housings to trim weight. The exception is with the mid-to-upper end White's models that still use the solid metal housings. Plastic is, by its nature, more fragile and can break more easily.

Pampering my detector, it stays in the right hand (since I am right-handed). My recovery pouch w/rounded-off screwdriver and my Lesche Digger are on my left side. When I locate a target, which are mostly in the surface to 4" depth range, I simple squat down or kneel down, holding my detector in my right hand, and make quick target recoveries with my left had. Very seldom to I need to set my detector down.

When I do, and it doesn't matter if it is one of my White's, Teknetics, or a Tesoro model, I don't have 'fall down' issues. I set them down so they are properly upright and straight, and close so the headphone cable doesn't tug. I Like the headphone jack location on the G2/GB/Omega\ etc. and haven't found it to be a problem as far as balance is concerned.

Just pick the GB or G2 model you prefer. Use it enough to get comfortable with it. I am sure you will find it to work well and not have any issues with tipping.

Thanks guys. Monte, as usual your explanations were very helpful. I purchased the G2 from Bart. For those interested, here is a youtube link on how to modify the headphone jack to the rear.
