I was reading the posts from Bonnie's message. I just received my Exp. on Monday.Took it out today after work. I realize I'm going to have to work at it. Do you guys go mostly by the tone or by the screen? Have already found a dime and a penny where my other detector was silent. I think it has great possibilities!

Personally I always hunt in advaced smart find screen gives you more info the cursor the position plus the tone of the target. The box cursor or what ever you want to call it is important, if you see it jumping all over the place youll know that your sens is to high so youll know to back off ,theres alot of little things like that that youll learn.IF I WERE YOU START OUT IN SMARTFIND SCREEN MAN SENS AT 20 THAT SHOULD BE STABLE PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE,HUNT IN COIN AND JEWLERY THATS IT GET USED TO THE TONES AND THE POSISTION OF YOUR BOX AND WHAT ITS DOING IF ITS GOING CRAZY LOWER YOUR SENS.DONT KNOW YOUR HUNTING SITUATION OR WHERE BUT THAT SHOULD BE A GOOD START AND ONLY DIG SOLID CONTINOUS SOUNDS TO START YOUR MACHINE WILL STILL OUT PERFORM MOST JUST LISTEN GET YOUR EARS USED TO THE TONES.

Haven't seen anyone address this approach but I agree with Bunn and everyone else. Learn the tones, it is of the utmost importance in the Minelab Explores. You can only get so much from the book and then it is practice with all the settings posted. The one thing I haven't seen anyone address which I did and still do is compare signals to my hunting buddy. Find someone with an Explorer who is experienced and will hunt with you and compare signals. We even go so far as to use each others headphones on certain targets to check tones. We use different size and types of coils also and this helps in comparing. I'm sure I still have a lot to learn but it has helped us both immensely with our Explorers and we find decent stuff all the time. As the saying goes if it ain't there it ain't there.Hope this helps you somewhat. J.B.
