NO THRESHOLD

Except for back in the mid 70's, all the detectors I used before I got the Explorer were "silent search". It didn't take me long to realize that the constant nulling of the Ex was something that I could live without. As soon as I turned off the threshold, the Ex turned in to the smoothest "silent search" detector I have ever used! Just to be sure I wasn't missing any targets, I would run with treshold until I got a deep, weak signal. When I took the threshold off, the signal was just as strong and it made it a lot easier, at least for me, to tell that I had a good signal. I don't need the nulling to tell me I'm running my coil over something I have discriminated out. Shucks, that's why I discriminated it out in the first place-- so I wouldn't have to listen to it !! I run an old coins program that also includes nickels and I'd bet the farm that anyone running with a threshold right behind me, isn't going to hear anything that I didn't if they run their coil over the exact same ground. I'm sure there are many of you that do just as well, and maybe better, with using the threshold but if you want pure detecting pleasure, turn that sucker off for a while and give it a try.

Larry,I have done the same experiment and find that I hear the deep ones just as good without the threshold,in fact I find that I can hunt longer and have the sensitivity turned up higher without a lot of falseing, but there are times that you need that threshold to let you that there is a lot of things being rejected by your detector so you know that you have to slooow down your sweep speed to find the good targets. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

When I first started using the XS I liked running the threshold one click below audible because it was real nice not hearing any thing. But then I started worrying about the ones I might be missing so I moved back to audible threshold and I feel more certain about not missing any tone spikes. But you know I can't say with any certainty that I would be missing them when running no threshold.
I would bet that you don't miss much and probably that you aren't missing anything your going for. I hunt in silent mode most of the time, but it's because I hunt in a total null, my threshold is there somewhere but I can't hear it.
BTW, when night hunting it's a really good idea to hunt in silent operation so that you can hear what's going on around you better.

One thing I have found is that in areas that are giving me trouble stabilizing my machine running a threshhold seems to help. Otherwise I rarely use it.
