Rotting Pewter Shield

Here is a shield I found this past Sunday that is made of pewter. The piece I understand was probably used as a gun sling orniment, presumably in the 1700's. There are two letters on the back of it M E. I would suppose it is the initials of the maker. There is one big problem I have with this, and that is it is friable. How can I stop this thing from deteriorating to dust? Also is the word shield the appropriate name to use for these types of pieces. I have another one of brass posted in the photo gallery, but can't figure how to link to it.

Hi Jim; We carry a Coin Conditioner/Preservative solution that I use on some Pewter relics. It helps to stabilize the metal. It is called Blue Ribbon and is located in our Specialty Items page. It will treat a lot of coins or relics. I've seen similar devices on horse tack. They are called harness bosses. Not sure about your piece however.
