I have posted this before and still no id on what it might be, But I will post it again for something to do...

I have been told that Iohn would be John, but if you notice some numbers are backwards..? So lets have all your best ideas

The holes in the back look like button holes, don't they, and I think you are correct with John Booth. The date could just as easily be 1799 as 1766. It's a one of a kind for sure.
The first thing that came to mind was a slave tag, but I haven't been able to find anything remotely similar. As well, the first verified dated slave tag is from 1800. Seems there are lots of fakes around, but genuine items are worth a small fortune.
