Which metal detector would be best?

Hi everyone! My name is Nick, and I've recently decided to take up metal detecting. I used to do it with my father when I was a kid, but quit after I could never find anything. Twelve years later, I'm back and extremely interested in detecting again. I won't be quitting again, or at least anytime soon no matter how hard it gets to find anything. So my question to all of you is, which metal detector would be great for my environment? I live in Arkansas and would be hunting in old parks, schools, fields, nearby lakes, etc. I'm willing to spend up to about a thousand dollars and hopefully not much over right now. The key thing that I am really worried about is the battery. I would love to have a rechargeable battery pack instead of blowing hundreds of dollars on batteries. Any input and comment is greatly appreciated. Please list the reasons why you think the detector you recommend would be choice. Good luck to everyone out there and stay cool! Also, my last post was deleted I guess for being in the wrong section. Moderators please let me know where to put this thread because I cannot find the proper place. Thank you.

~Nick

Most modern detectors now come with rachargable pack and charger, if you go for a minelab etrac or explorer you can't go wrong, some good second hand deals about and you could save a load on the new price, although not everyones cup of tea as they are not as light as some but very well built. Whites have some good models too.
Have a read through the Etrac and Explorer forum and you'll see why, the Sovereign also takes some beating, loads of different coils/accesories available to suit all ground conditions

Thanks for the reply, I've been looking at the Etrac and they seem to find a lot of coins and silver. That is a plus, but I'm curious, will they find gold just as easy? I know gold and jewelry won't be easy to find, but will it detect it well?

I'm finding the Whites V3i to be a pretty decent do it all detector. Give one a look and see what you think.

Just something to consider. If you are going to get one used, Whites warranty IS transferable. Minelabs are NOT.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I will definitely buy a whites if I buy one used. I settled for a Garrett's Ace 250 with a sniper coil for now. A nice cheap one until I can afford the expensive one.
