    Mining for lead

Yes, all three of those have a cavity in the base. FYI, one of my club members showed some of their bullets from this site around diggerpalosa, and the general consensus was they were Civil War period.

    Mining for lead

No, they were scattered all over the place in several areas. They were generally buried about 3 to 8 inches deep. Ohio soil in this area tends to be fairly mild. I also posted this in the today’s finds forum. There has been a little more discussion there. Some of these appear to be “newer“...

    Mining for lead

I spent a chunk of Saturday morning calling and visiting local gun shops. The first location that knew something of Civil War bullets pointed out the “wadcutters” as newer bullets (but I don’t know how much newer). These are the shorter flatnose four on the left side of the picture with 14...

    Mining for lead

I would say closer to Kentucky.

Has Anyone Tried the Go Terrain App?

Just remember, any location program will rely on the GPS on your phone. So the stated accuracy of any program doesn’t matter as much as the capability of your phone. If you have a newer phone with multi channel GPS you will have better accuracy than an old phone with single- channel GPS.

    Thank you very much!

    Mining for lead

Thank you! I am definitely looking forward to the next time our club is granted permission to be there.

    Mining for lead

Are you referring to the mushroomed one with the copper jacket or the more conical all-lead one next to that one?

    Mining for lead

Thanks! Not having found one before I don’t have any experience with the patina. Based on property ownership, I don’t think any re-enactments could have been held here for at least the last 100 years. I might have to swing by a local gun shop and see what they have to say.

    Mining for lead

This is very close to a known large Union camp. Other members of my club were noting these are not powdery white like finds in some other states. It might have something to do with our local Ohio soil, which is generally rather mild. Based on the location, these would not have originated from...

    Mining for lead

After that much digging, I wish it still had the ointment!

    Mining for lead

That sounds nice! The only potential civil war button I have found was the back of a two-piece button with no marks.

    Mining for lead

These are finds from two days of hunting at the same site. I had never found a Civil War bullet and always wanted to. I thought perhaps I might someday find one or two, but I never imagined I would find this many. With all the iron grunts, I was using the Tekkna program with the 11x13 on my...

Hi. Does anyone know what this is?

I would definitely subject the clear portion to a scratch test with a knife blade. If it can be scratched with a pocket knife blade it is not quartz. It just looks a little too rounded to be quartz to me. (If the quartz is that rounded, then any softer host rock should’ve been worn away.) If...
