Can anyone help identify this rock, or have any suggestions on what it might be.

It appears to be layered, and it appears to be micaceous. Do you have little shiny flecks all over it, some of which can flake off? If so, I am thinking a weathered mica schist.
 
Yes, there are gold shiny flakes all over it, that resemble glitter. When rock is picked up the flakesbstick to fingers.
