Hi everyone! 👋
I’m new to treasure hunting and metal detecting, and I’m excited to learn from all of you. I’d love to hear:
Your best tips and tricks for beginners
Favorite locations you enjoy hunting (beach, parks, old homesteads, historical sites)
Any gear recommendations that have helped you find more treasures
What you look for when choosing a spot to hunt
Here’s what I’m currently using and what I think every beginner should have:
Metal Detector Garrett ACE 300, Minelab Vanquish 340, or Fisher F22 are great options.
  • Pinpointer – Helps locate targets precisely in the ground.
  • Digging Tools – Hand trowel, digging knife, or small folding shovel.
  • Finds Pouch / Bag – To carry coins, jewelry, and other finds.
  • Headphones – Makes detecting easier in noisy areas.
  • Gloves & Knee Pads – Protect your hands and knees while digging.
  • Sand Scoop – Perfect if you hunt on beaches.
  • Magnifying Glass or Loupe – For inspecting coins, jewelry, and artifacts.
  • Notebook / GPS / Smartphone App – To log finds, locations, and notes.I’d love to see photos of your best finds and hear what worked (and didn’t) for you. Let’s make this a great thread for beginners and experienced detectorists alike. Happy hunting

Don't forget the trash bag. I will not hunt with someone that leaves there trash or puts it back in the hole. I have made some friends mad by telling them that. I hate to go to a spot and find foil or trash in a hole that has been dug. Sorry but that is the way i i am, if i dig it up i take it out.

Like Flintstone says Dig it up take it with you. Leave your holes better than you found them, make sure you cover your holes. Check with local clubs to find out what works in your areas. What works for me in my area might not work for you in your area. Minelab metal detectors work in most ares. Garrett pin pointers work for me. Lesche digging tools or predator are good diggers.
Some club members might sell you some of their digging tools and digging pouches at a discounted price. Maybe hook up with a local to give you some tips on places to go to and places to avoid.
Just my two cents worth

Bug spray…..tick spray
Spray water bottle….I use a left over eye glass cleaner bottle
If traveling a distance extra water n lunch
Hat for the sun, sun tan lotion or spray
Check to see if your machine, headphones and coil all are working

Make a list of everything you normally take on a digging outing.
CK it twice before you leave.

Nothing like forgetting your pin pointer or spare backup batteries.

Get a Latching key ring.
Snap it in solid somewhere on your person.
Nothing like getting back to your vehicle only to find you lost your keys.

A headlamp comes in very handy.
Especially when you're pushing sunset.
