Last hunt before the white death

Thanks! They don’t always come out that nice. For some reason the rims of IHCs tend to be delicate and can start flaking off. But I am pleased at how well this one came out.

Last hunt before the white death

I purchased a set of Andres crayons on-line. Crayon is sort of a misnomer. There are two “pencils” with different hardnesses of what I think might be pencil lead. There is another for coarser work with a fiberglass core. The last one has a fine grade steel wool brush which can be pulled out...

Last hunt before the white death

Got out for a day before the white death arrived. We have over a foot of snow on the ground now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to thaw off before the end of January. More snow forecast for tonight. 😕 So, I used my set of Andres crayons to clean up the IHC I found. Before and after...

Time to get the lead out

When our club found numerous bullets in our first outing, we wondered about the patina, the abundance, and the variety as well. One member took several samples to a major metal detecting gathering, and the general consensus was (aside from some obvious newer bullet designs) that these bullets...

I hunted in Culpepper last weekend

You hit the jackpot! That must’ve been one fun day!

Time to get the lead out

Out of the ground that is… 😏 I posted this in the daily finds forum, but somebody else recommended I repost it in the Civil War forum. Our club recently obtained permission to go back to a site we visited earlier this year with an abundance of Civil War bullets. This is near a known Union...

Time to get the lead out

I am curious why you think they are not Civil War vintage?

Time to get the lead out

Yeah, after we clean it out a bit might have to ask them to till it so we can collect some composite soil samples…

Time to get the lead out

Out of the ground that is… 😏 Our club recently obtained permission to go back to a site we visited earlier this year with an abundance of Civil War bullets. This is near a known Union camp. So these bullets would not have been derived from a battle but probably just goofing off or target...

    Trigger guard or scissor fragment?

Well I will just have to keep hunting. Thank you both!

    Trigger guard or scissor fragment?

I think the title pretty well summarizes it. Ideas? The “tongue“ is not straight but deviates to the left.

A button kind of day-Thanksgiving update

Possibly. However, they do not appear to be corroding like typical lead. I thought bag seals were made of lead due to the ease of impressing a seal on them?

    Help needed

I concur, looks like concretions to me too.

A button kind of day-Thanksgiving update

Over Thanksgiving weekend I was able to go back to a site where I found about 20 flat buttons (including some Tombacs), an 1822 large cent, and an old farm or communion token. Once again, I didn’t find much in the field except for the small area where all the old stuff is located. This time, I...

Got out before dark and then BOOM !!!

Beauty! That is the one I have not crossed off my list yet.

    100 yr old House

Looks like you dug a few holes! Is that some sort of small bottle on the left?

    Very odd puffy quarter

I have seen coins sheared in half the hard way – like the face without the back. Something may have caused the sandwich surfaces to delaminate from the core. But, how to puff it up from there? I am not a metallurgist, so I don’t know relative coefficients of expansion or melting points. Would...

    I found … Mount Rushmore!

Although this one is more ornate and in better shape than any other pocket watch I have found, I do not see any writing or marks of any sort on either side. I suspect the “shield” in the middle was meant to have an engraving (or at least initials), but there’s nothing there. ☹️

    I found … Mount Rushmore!

A pocket watch back was one of my first thoughts. But, wouldn’t that have some sort of hinge or snap cover indentation or the like? The rim on this just appears to be smooth and even all the way around with no weld or solder point.

    I found … Mount Rushmore!

Well, at least a souvenir pressed penny depicting Mount Rushmore… I headed back to a site I have hunted once. There was an old school here, and the owner gave me permission to hunt down the road too. There was a nice nail bed at the second property which got my attention, but I think it has...
