Compadre vs. The Other Tesoro Models

The Compadre is far and away the most talked about Tesoro model on this forum. Is that because the returns it yields far outweigh its relatively small purchase price or because it has special (magical) capabilities that even its more expensive brethren don't have? To ask my question another...

    Compadre Modifications (Non-Traditional)

I've read posts about water-proofing the Compadre, about modifying it to accept more than one coil and about modifying (adjusting) the GB and SEN pots. Have any of you modified your Compadre's in other ways (either operationally or cosmetically)? If so, please share.

    Compadre and Foil

Took my Compadre out today for the first time - to the beach. I set the discrimination just past 'foil' on the selector and was surprised that a lot of foil that I found there didn't discriminate out. Before I took it out, I tested it on a piece of store-bought aluminum foil. I couldn't...

    Tesoro Compadre High Gain Circuitry

Can someone explain the meaning of the term 'high gain circuitry' and why it's advantageous to have this kind of circuitry in your metal detector? Are there pros and cons to having this kind of circuitry? Is the Compadre the only Tesoro with high gain circuitry?

    Whites 6.59MHz Machines Obsolete?

All of White's newer VLF offerings seem to be 14MHz or 15MHz machines, presumably because they're more capable of locating low conductor targets. Where does that leave the older 6.59MHz machines (e.g., Classics, Eagle, etc.)? Have they been rendered obsolete or are they superior to their high...

    VLF Filter Type

Are the GBP and G2 machines 2 or 3-filter machines? I'm curious because I've been told that coil sweep speed should be adjusted depending on machine filter type.

CleanSweep Coil - 4 Pin vs. 5 Pin

There are apparently both 4 pin an 5 pin CleanSweep coils out there. Can someone explain which Tesoro detectors require the 4 pin variety and which require the 5 pin variety? Also, some of the CleanSweep coils are apparently lighter than others. Are those the 4 pin, the 5 pin or the newer...

    Knob Removal/Replacement

I'd like to remove and replace one of the knobs on my Bandido II uMAX. I thought it could be removed by just pulling upward, but that's apparently not the case. Is there a special process for removing and replacing knobs on these machines? Your guidance would be appreciated.

    MX5 vs. M-6

Anyone have an opinion? Is the MX5 superior, newer technology or is it essentially the M-6 in a plastic case with a few extra features? To put it another way, would it make sense to unload an M-6 to pick up an MX5?

    Fe3O4 G2/GBP Iron Oxide Scale

It's my understanding the iron oxide scale is primarily used to measure the amount of mineralization in the soil. But the scale also appears to fluctuate as the coil passes over various targets in the ground. What do the scale readings tell one about the targets under the coil (if anything)...

Compadre &. Eldorado uMAX Equivalent ED-180 Performers?

Both are true ED-180 machines. The Eldorado operates at 10.6khz while the Compadre operates at 12khz - pretty close. Would I be incorrect to assume that that the Eldorado should perform just as well as the Compadre when it comes to finding micro-jewelry - perhaps even better, because the...

    Excal Frequency of Repair Concerns

I currently own and hunt the SoCal wet sand beaches with the Soverign GT. I'm thinking about picking up an Excal 1000 so that I can venture out into the surf without having to worry about water incurrsion issues. However, I've read quite a few posts by folks who've had their Excals fail (for a...

    Compadre Mystique

Everyone swears by this machine - especially it's ability to sniff out micro jewelry that other more expensive machines don't seem to be able to locate. Is the Compadre circuitry somehow different than the circuitry used in the other Tesoro models? If not, what technological attribute or...

    GBP/G2 At the Beach

Most of the threads on this forum talk about how great these two detectors are for nugget and relic hunting. However, I haven't seen much discussion about how these two might perform at the beach (particularly on the dry sand). I use my GBP almost exclusively for hunting the dry sand at the...
