    Salt shaker lid....silver or junk?

I found this salt shaker lid tonight. Underground (6 inches deep) the TID bounced between 38 and 40. Once I dug it out, it air tests a very solid 38. Could it be silver? Or is it pot metal or tin or ???

    Walking Liberty Half!!:detecting:

Went back to the "old" football field for a while tonight. I decided to grid where I THINK the home team bleachers used to be. I started finding junk and some clad, so I must be in the right place. I was just about to quit, when I hit what I thought would be a quarter. Instead, it was a 1941...

Sterling FFA ring and went to a new location

Friday evening I spent a couple of hours in front of the school instead of the playground. This is where the high school kids tend to hang out during lunch hour. Well...at least I did. Anyway, found a cool FFA ring. It got whacked pretty good by a lawnmower. No name inside. Also found a Bible...

    Erratic chatter - FIXED:clapping:

My detector has been getting an erratic chatter for quite some time....and getting worse. It would just go nuts until I shook it or pushed several buttons. I knew that the problem was probably a loose wire, but I wasn't sure if it was in the coil or the control box. Lately, I've been thinking...

First three months with the X-Terra 70. Finds and lessons learned.

I purchased my used X-Terra 70 in December, but couldn't dig until March

Boy Scout slide, ring, and toy money

Didn't get out much this last week, but did find a few cool things. The Boy Scout neckerchief slide is from the late '50's. The cheap ring says sterling(and has a patent number???). The toy quarter TID'd.....like a quarter. $ .90 in clad.

    MT Meteorite hunt cancelled

I bought my detector to hunt meteorites, AFTER seeing a re-run of "Meteorite Men" last fall. I'm a caver, but once I saw the "Whitecourt Crater" episode last fall....it looked just like on of my "sinks"(cave collapse) So...I've been learning about meteorites, craters, AND metal detecting all...

    First Barber quarter!!!!

I had such good luck with Zero Threshold using the 5x10 HF coil, I thought I'd go back to the park and use the stock 9" MF coil. It's definitely deeper..... I moved over to a place I hadn't hit very hard, and dug up an old can top. It was opened with a church key!! Hmmm....maybe I'll find...

Pro Pointer and Threshold at Zero = Big Improvement

I'm now hunting in All Metal with Threshold at Zero.(Previously pattern 1 and Threshold at 8 or 9). Targets seem to be hitting "harder" (sharper??) than they were before. I'm definitely getting deeper. Dug up a small button at 8". I also found a 1963 silver dime. It rang in so hard that I...

My oldest coin and two broken diggers

Found my oldest coin (so far) today. A 1925-S penny.:clapping: I also broke both of my diggers. :veryangry: I WAS going to just order a Predator/Lesche right away....but I think I'll try welding a handle onto my broken one first. It's no wonder it didn't hold up....the steel didn't go all...

    Pro Pointer just arrived:detecting:

My X-70 came with some extras...including an Automax V4 pin pointer. Because it was bulky and awkward, I didn't use it for awhile. Once I did, my recovery times sped up.(according to youtube videos, my automax is better than usual) After doing some air testing with my new Pro Pointer, I'm...

    Earring hunt

I stop in at home today to find a message on my machine...from a guy that let me detect in his yard. First thing I think is, "OH NO. He didn't like the way I replaced the plugs." NOPE. He lives across the street from the Football Field/Track. He saw several girls crawling around on the...

    First gold!!....but no pics

I found my first gold ring today!!! Big men's ring with a huge "diamond". Inside said 14k THGE LIND, AWESOME hold-my-breath cool find....but TID of 44. Under the 10X loupe...the ring looked pitted and the "diamond" was scratched and had rounded edges. The ring had a stamping/inscription...

TID is shifted +4 on my X70

I've been noticing that my X70 TID's are consistently +4 over the TID chart in the FAQFAQ. It's been that way for pennies and quarters. I was thinking that maybe it's happening just because the soil is REALLY wet right now and I'm a new user. But then I had a thought..... I've been using...

Quick hunt last night yields older coins(finally!)

When I got home last night, I intended to go out for an hour...but ended up 2 hours. Thought I'd try a different place...around the benches of one of the "new" baseball fields. I was just looking for more clad. First dig yielded a '66 dime and a '56 wheat penny. A short time later, I found a...

    Cherry picking the high tones:yo:

Had a lot of fun today!!! Hit the park/baseball field again. The X-70 is MUCH more stable now that the ground has thawed out.:minelab: I decided to only dig solid high tones and work on getting my holes/plugs to look nice. So I'm leaving a lot of things yet....but most of them will be...

I finally dug my very first target

My first detector was a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505. I got it in December. The very first "good" target showed as a quarter or possibly a $.50. Once I determined that the BH wasn't good enough for meteorites AND a lucky hit on a keno machine, I sold the BH(had it for a whole week) and picked...

    Wow! GB=9

Tried a new place this evening....in front of a bar that was open from 1914 to the mid 1990's. I fully expect it to be nail and pull tab hell, but I was hoping to cherry pick some silver or clad. Set up the detector and the ground balance was 9!! I left it in Auto Track. I checked it a...

    Coil weights?

Has anybody weighed all the available coils? If not, I suppose one would have to include the entire cable with each coil (and no skidplate) to ensure consistency.

    Falsing...ice, snow, water

Is this just a normal problem with metal detectors? For example, going from grass to snow or ice, I detect a signal. The signal often seems to disappear as the surface snow/ice recedes. What about frozen ground? Am I getting possible false signals...simply because of unevenly frozen...
