Another day at the Delaware Canal

It was a scorcher today so I cut my hunt short (only about 2 hours). I went to an area south of Yardley, PA this morning and found the digging really difficult. This section of the canal was created using lots of stone because it lacked a natural embankment. I managed to find another wheatie...

First try at the Delaware River Canal

I got my permission from PDNR to metal detect in the Delaware River Canal State Park yesterday so I took my first crack at it. They actually have a fair amount of rules to follow but given enough time and luck I should still find something. Today was a wheatie in pretty poor shape. That's OK...

19th Century Farmhouse Bursts My Bubble

I went to a 19th century farmhouse with my partners in crime, my sons Nathan (11 years old) and Owen (9 years old). The property, which is outside Turbotville, PA, had never been detected so we went in with high hopes. Two minutes in I get a great signal from my AT Pro and pull out several...

    Another Silver Ring

I've been having a fair amount of luck on the silver jewelry this year. This is my 4th silver and my 3rd ring. I took the AT Pro out to some softball fields while my sons played around with their boomarangs. I only detected for about an hour. I managed 65 cents to go with the ring.

    Military Shell Casing

This past weekend I went to upstate New York for a family reunion. I took along the AT Pro just in case I had some spare time. My wife's family owns some property on the Racquette River about 50 miles east of Fort Drum so I decided to detect a little there. When I pulled this shell casing out...

    1800's Farm House

I started detecting a property that I was told had been detected once before. Beautiful early 1800's stone farm house with another stuccoed house in back. It was a scorcher so I only detected for about 3 hours before calling it quits for the day. I managed to pull this out from 6" down...

    Confederate Infantry Button

I found this button in an unlikely place in Southeastern PA nowhere near Gettysburg or any of the other skirmish sites leading up to Gettysburg. It rang up as a penny and is made of brass. I almost threw it away but decided to keep it and post it on the Whatzit forum. I had two people confirm...

    Old button...but how old?

I found this button in an area that has been in use since the early 1700's. It is definitely brass and rung up as a penny on my detector. I'm posting both sides so someone out there who is an expert in buttons can see how this thing is put together. For all I know it's only 30 years old!

    Another Ring?

I found this in the same area as the one in my first post. It would definitely be a woman's ring (if it is a ring) because it's smaller than the first one. It almost looks like the side that is visible when worn is non-metallic. Possibly an old mood ring?

    Ring?

I found this in an area that was a training ground during the Civil War and then was turned into a fairground until about the 1940's. Now a portion of it is a tot lot and the rest is a high school. It's finished just enough to possibly be an inexpensive man's ring but that seam in it makes me...

    Bradley Beach Finds

I did my first beach hunt today with the AT Pro. I only had about an hour or so I didn't dig up a lot (a couple toy cars $1.83 in change and a Bermuda Nickle). My favorite find was the 1997 Bermuda Nickle. My guess is someone picked it up on a cruise since Bermuda and Bahamas cruises are...

    Busty Betty Token

I was detecting in a park that was established before 1920 in Philadelphia. I didn't find a whole lot (49 cents) but found this token that I identified as a "Busty Betty". I found one that was very similar that was listed as produced in the 1960's. It's anybody's guess if that's accurate for...

My 9-year old's first extended outing

My two sons are the ones who talked me into getting a metal detector to "search for treasure". My youngest one is now starting to show interest in going out himself. I wanted to practice retrieving targets with a screwdriver so I let him do the detecting while I dug. He managed to find 66...

    Parking Token

I did some research on a local park and found that it was originally farmland associated with a colonial home that was not included in the land gift to my borough. There are a couple ball fields that have been there since before 1992 (that's as far back as I could go on Google Earth). I had a...

    Ball Park Gold

I went with my brother to several parks in his area. I didn't have much success finding anything until the last park of the day. My AT Pro toned at at 67 near one of the dugouts and I pulled out this 14K gold wedding band at about 4 inches deep. Made my day!

    More Silver Jewelry

I went to a newer park today although I only know it was established after 1962. Found plenty of clad ($6 total) as well as lots and lots of bottle caps. When I first pulled this out I only saw the bottom side so didn't immediately know what it was. Pretty cool tiara design with 925 on the...

    Silver Crucifix

I took the AT Pro out to a community park that has several ball fields on the north side. I found this at about 3 inches near some bleachers. This makes my third silver find of the year (two rings previously). Alas, no silver coins...but I'm still hoping. About $50 in clad and several...

    Bank Item

I was detecting near some ball fields in Bethlehem, PA when I came across this item only about 3 inches deep near some spectator stands. I'm able to make out that it says "Bethlehem National Bank" and has a 1957 D wheatie in the center. Never seen anything like it before. I thought it was a...

    Large Coronet Cent

I found this along a path that ran between two properties. The path led to a small park on the lower side of town near the main street that had been the main road through town since about 1770. Everything else I found that day was contemporary so I consider myself lucky.
