Not metal. But a crazy find while detecting

Just wanted to share this cool and unusual piece of history dug while detecting a cellar hole. A mid-1800s toothbrush, made of bone. The bristles, long rotted away would have been made of boar hair. Not everyday you see something like this (at least not if your me). Going to go back this...

Upstate NY finger lakes/ Rochester area?

Hey everyone. Looking for anyone in the upstate NY finger lakes region to hunt with. Been going it alone for years and have only ran into one other detectorist, and he was a condescending flake who just talked about how my minelab detector was no better than his $50 dollar machine then grew...

Tons of cool relics bottles and more at 1800s homesite

Had a great day detecting yesterday. I found some of the coolest curiousities and relics I've ever seen including an unopened can of tobacco, a bone or possibly ivory toothbrush from the mid 1800s. Many great bottles, and even a hundred year old DR Scholls shoe insert. The finds were great and...

Video of 1846 large cent, rare 1858 flying eagle penny

Here is the video of me unearthing my oldest and rarest coins ever. Also a couple other decent finds as well. And you can see some beautiful 1800s homesites and cellar holes that were found through some exhausting research and an even more exhausting hike! http://youtu.be/mOBa0Oq1vc8

Rare 1858 flying eagle penny, braided hair large cent

Today I took the 1800s map I found through extensive research and found another 3 homesites, 2 were smaller size cellar holes but the last one I discovered was the remnants of an enormous mansion. It was beautiful though nothing was still standing. You could see the round base for the tower...

4 different cellar holes found using 1800s map!

Using an old map circa 1870 I hiked for several hours through thick growth and forest to find not one but 4 separate homestead locations. I breifly detected each one, pulling out mostly large items. I plan on going back and cleaning up in the future. My finds were: 2 different Rogers silver...

    Colonial home site found

Today I finally found the colonial homesite that I have been researching and looking for for several weeks. I found a lot of cool items, some silver plated objects, parts of a pocket watch, some decorative pieces, harmonica reeds, a cool bell, and my favorite piece: a silver-dollar sized glass...

New location keeps giving up old silver

Last night I decided to go back to the school I found a few weeks ago before darkness and rain arrived. Since finding the school I have pulled 3 mercs, a 1904 Canadian dime, and a ton of old wheats. By this time I felt I knew where the oldest parts of the grounds were and decided to...

    Mystery item

Found a very old cobblestone rubble in the woods. Old bottles and trash everywhere. And almost every cobble was a hot rock. It was very hard to find anything. But I did find this item, and I know it's old. And fairly ornate. But I have no idea what it is. Maybe an old Trevet. Maybe part of an...

    Oldest coin this year

Found my oldest coin so far this year, and surprisingly it was Canadien. In NY i find a ton of clad Canadien and some silvers from the 50s. But this was a shock. I was hunting a school yard that I found and knew was good when the first three targets I dug were MERCS. But this 1904 Canadian dime...

    New location paying off

Hunted an old school I found during the slow of winter. Found my second silver of the year, a wheat, and a neat 1940s Tom Mix Straight Shooter radio show membership bracelet. Also found close to $10 in clad, an old whistle and a modern stopwatch. Def going back to the spot for more!

    Safari search coils

Can anyone recommend a good search coil that will improve the safaris ability to pick up coins/buttons? I have never used anything but the stock pro coil. I am wondering if there's stuff I am missing in areas I have hunted out. I have never used an aftermarket coil before so I don't know any...

    Today's safari hunt

Found a fired musket ball, and a really cool find: a strip of lead that I'm guessing was used to make more musket balls by colonials

    Shadow box

I'm looking to get a shadow box to display some of my better finds at home. Does anyone have any recommendations or can you point me to a place to buy one that would be good for coins/flat buttons?

    Musket ball- before and after

Went hunting this morning, found the fired musketball first, then later pulled out what I thought was a large square nail, but is a strip of lead colonials would cut and melt to make more musketballs. First time finding one of those. It was pretty cool to find.

    A rock?

So I had a first today as far as finds go... I had a solid signal on my safari, very clear and repetitive. I dug down, moved the plug and a baseball-sized rock out...then nothing. So I passed my detector over the plug....nothing. It was the darn rock. Just a round, granite (maybe) looking...

    ID for large cent?

Can anyone tell me what tone and TID a large cent makes on the safari? I KNOW there has to be one around my hunting grounds. I've found too many 1700s buttons and relics to believe there's not one. At least that's my hope!

    Colonial items found

A quick hunt in my front yard this afternoon went better than expected. I've hinted it a hundred times but it keeps giving. Found a colonial copper flat button with three stars visible on the back, a musket ball, an old bullet still lodged in an ancient piece of wood, and a modern watch face...

    Use for square nails

I have dug hundreds of square nails (or cut nails) and I wanted to share that if your town/city has a historical society or equivalent and they are helping in the restoration of colonial buildings or other that were made with square nails they will gladly accept donations to aid in rebuilding...
