Friday's hunt--a tale of woe and resolve

Hi, everyone, This happened on Friday, and it has taken me clear until Sunday night to be able to tell the story without feeling sick to my stomach. First of all, I have been detecting for five years. You might have seen my picture on White's home page in December, or read the story about the...

Help me uphold the honor of the V-3!!!

Hi, I'm getting my butt kicked by some of my friends who have other makes and models of detectors. We've talked it over and we think the problem is that the V-3 is not discriminating out signals that are masking better signals. I use the coin and jewelry program (have used Hi-pro a lot, too)...

    Nickel search

Thanks to everyone who replied, but no one has yet addressed my idea of using the "prospecting" program. Based on what I'm reading in the manual, that program would be more likely to register nickels. Am I right? For those of you who use it, is there anything I need to know about it before...

    Nickel search

Hi, Everyone--after 4 1/2 years of detecting, I've found a Morgan dollar, some silver halves, quarters, and dimes, and a couple of Indian cents, but never a Buffalo or V nickel! To remedy that, I've decided to go on a nickel hunt. I'm thinking of using the "Prospecting" program in hopes of...

Anyone know when detailed V-3 book might come out?

I'm definitely interested in getting one, as I find the owner's manual to be over my head in some areas and not strong enough in others. Thanks, Mike

    wireless headphones

I think they're really comfortable and convenient, and I would buy them again. I like being able to lay my detector down and stand up if I want to, and so on. To me, it's definitely a luxury, but it's like any other luxury--once you have it, you can't imagine doing without it. Another...

    filters on the V3

One last question, then. What level of mineralization is "low enough" to merit the change from the DD to the concentric coil? The ground where I live is pretty mineralized. What reading would tell me that it's probably ok to make the switch, or should i just make it anyway, knowing that lots...

    filters on the V3

Thanks guys for answering my question. Based on what I'm reading from this post and answers to another one that I've posted regarding coils, it seems I might get more depth by going to a 9.5 concentric, a lower filter, and a slower swing, as long as ground conditions will permit it. Mike

    filters on the V3

Can anyone give me an idea as to how slow is "slow enough" for use with the 5.0 filter? If you say the "period" of a normal swing in normal conditions for most people is about 1.5 to 2.0 seconds, what would be appropriate for a 5.0? Thanks, Mike

    Coil choice question

Hi, When would it be a good idea to take the DD off and put a 9.5 concentric on? Is there some level of mineralization that would make one more desirable to use than the other? How about ground filter? Does one work better (deeper? more stable?) with a 5.0 filter than the other? Are there...

    V3 and gold hunting?

Hi, Let's say I want to take the V3 into gold country and look for nuggets. 1--Is the V3 a good detector for this, or should I borrow a friend's detector made specifically for gold? 2--If the V3 is indeed suitable, what settings should I use, and what else should I know before trying this...

    Battery Type--does it ever matter?

Does any condition or circumstance exist where it is advantageous to use alkaline batteries in the V3 instead of the rechargeable, or vice versa? I have a detecting buddy who has an "alkaline only" philosophy and he does very well, but I like the rechargeable battery better. Also, with the...

What kind of gloves do you all use?

It would be crazy for me not to wear gloves. In the past few years, I've pulled rusty nails, box-cutter blades, razor blades, and addict's needles. My gloves are a vital and important part of my gear. I wouldn't detect if I couldn't wear gloves.

    Location

I'm in Eugene, Oregon. I'm 55 years old, a retired high school Social Studies teacher. I currently work for the U of Oregon (go Ducks!) supervising student teachers. My favorite detecting grounds are the easements and yards of the older parts of Eugene. My favorite finds from this year are a...

Who is getting deep (coins at 8 inches) and how are you doing it?

Hi, Yep I read the first go-round but I'm still confused! Besides, some time has gone by, so more users have more experience, and I'm hoping to learn from them. Mike

Who is getting deep (coins at 8 inches) and how are you doing it?

Hi, everyone, By now, I'm sure someone has discovered how to get reliable depth out of their v3. If you're one of those people, could you please post what you're doing to get that deep? I'm mostly a coin hunter, so I'm talking about finding a dime or quarter 8 inches down in dirt, not sand...

    Oh my! A Morgan!!

The discovery of my first Morgan Dollar is simply a story of getting a tip and then being in the right place at the right time. In this case, my wife had been out and about, and had noticed a crew tearing out a sidewalk in an old part of town. Because there was only about an hour of daylight...
